Race Evaluation

Hudson Highlander 7:

Charlie

1. Tried to follow J-J straight up the hill, as I figured he knew exactly where it was. Everyone else seemed to be going straight. Couldn't see the map and so went in with Rick DeWitt. Long wait to punch.
2. In a crowd
3. With Jim Henderson. Saw a bunch of folks coming the other way, including Jeff Saeger. Not sure where they were going. At this point I got panicky and wondered if we were coming into 4, since I couldn't read the map.
4. Following Pavi, and feeling secure because I knew she would know where she was going.
5. Followed Pavi down to the road. She was motoring. On the road got passed by lots of folks. Saw J-J on the trail from 5 to 6 as I got there. Pavi, PEggy and Bernie at the control, but they got away from me.
6. Damn! Had to stop and try to puzzle out the map. Finally got near the control, but got led down the hill past it by Scott T, SAm L, and others.
7. I did Polebrook first, but this includes run in from 6, 3:08 potty break, and run out to 7 on Rockhouse. Phil B and Rick D passed me on the road, and Jeff S on the trail; cut through marsh and straighter line than Jeff, who continued on the trail. Nadine G at the control.
8. Climbed up through a lot more laurel than mapped, got lost on top and saw Rick D who was about 100 M E of control and headed for 9.
9. Went straight, got lost a bit below the hill.
10. Disaster. Ran about in the swamp, picked up the trail for a while. Thought I was going up the right re-entrant, but got into heavy laurel, bounced back out on the trail. Scratched my head for a bit, then ran the trail up past, and came in from the far side.
11. Another clunker. Knew exactly where I was 100 M from the bag, but saw a big rock and ran for it. Spent a lot of time running around checking rocks with Nadim, then headed back to my attack point and paced in on compass. What a dope!
12. Up along the top, tripping and falling a lot in the blueberries. Saw the open slope below the bag and went for that. Had to scratch my head again, then climb up against the sudden traffic flow, including Scott, Peter Goodwin, Glen T, Paul Bissett.
13. A little wobbly, but OK
14. Behind Scott. This was the only control on Rockhouse or Polebrook that I actually followed anyone.
15. Includes run in from Rockhouse and runout to Polebrook.
16. Saw Terry K right after, complaining about the laurel and heading in.
17. Dove into the laurel anyway. Not so bad.
18. Saw Suzanne A puzzling out her map just below the bag.
19. Popped over thehill into thisone and saw Scott punching. Jeff S right behind me.
20. Scott went low, Jeff and I stayed high, although he was behind me.
21. Jeff off to the left. I went up to the ridge quickly, then didn't see him again.
22. Easy
23. Saw Phil B up ahead. He went past it and I called him back.
24. Easy.
25. Includes runin from pole brook.
26. Stayed low, probably should have gone up
27. Couldn't decide what todo and ran off upthe trail for a while, then dropped back tothe road, came through the saddle, over and in.
28. OK gettingin, although nasty. Not so good getting out. Worst vegetation mapping I've seen in a bit. Lots of barberry, except raspberries mixed in under the power line.
29. slow. Glenn T and Scott T walking up ahead, but they're walking faster than my shuffle.
30. Easy.
31. Walking, Glenn in and out of sight way ahead.
32. Stumbled around, kept getting off up the hill and around rocks before I got straightened out and down to the stream.
33. All of a sudden I can jog a bit. Catch Glenn before the marsh, Scott after the road. Through the marsh, up the reentrant, off to the right a bit, but basically a clean leg.
34. Easy, except fall hard just before the road and have to undo the cramps before I can continue.
