Race Evaluation

33rd West Point A Meet: Red Long

jjcote

1. Through the woods, slightly right of the line. Kept good contact most of the way, though I was a little off to the right when I finally got close.
2. Straight the whole way. Lucky for Linda Kohn that I showed up or she might have never found the control buried in the weeds.
3. Straight, i.e. the high route.
4. Got just a bit low at the end, but I made good time getting there, so no big deal.
5.
6. A little right early on where the going was good, then I shifted over closer to the line for the second half, which put me on steep rocky stuff, which was slow. I wasn't quite sure where I was when I got to the end of the steep stuff, and hesitated, poking around a bit, but I guess I didn't lose too much time.
7. A little too far right, I guess, and I looked in the right place for the control when I got there, but didn't see the control, so I circled around under the spur to verify that I was in the right place, and saw the control when I came at it from the other direction. SA says this was my biggest time loss.
8. Pretty wide to the right, but no trails. I think I could have saved myself some climb by going more to the left, but maybe the vegetation would have been even worse that way. In any case, it looks like I lost time on the leg.
9.
10. Mapped as white woods for the second half of the leg, but it was actually quite thick.
11. Closer to the mapped green, maybe even in it, but everything I could see was nice white woods. Made good time on the road, with Mika on my tail. Hesitated in the circle because I saw what looked like a cliff on the map, but I was looking at a building.
12. Up the road and through control #15.
13. Mika went straighter, but got caught up in unmapped barberry, and I was in front for the rest of the course. I went a little further right, due to misreading the stone walls, but it worked out okay for me.
14.
15. Duh. There's a perfectly good road a few steps away that leads right to the control, but instead I went straight, through the green. That was not a better route. I even missed the trail to the last control and popped out in the field a bit to the right. But Mika chased me instead of taking the road, so I wasn't the only dummy.
