Orienteering race 1:47:00 [4] 6.87 km (15:34 / km) +200m 13:36 / km

1st leg on CLYDE B team 5 person handicap.

1st control was tricky with dificuly to execute attack point in the dark. Very tentative and lost a few minutes but nowhere near as costly as some folks found #1.
Very steady to 2. Conscious that if I missed and hit the wall there was no easy relocation point. Came in marginally high but OK.
Fine through 3 and 4.
#5 was very tricky. Easy attack point to get to (via a cow trodden bog) wall junction. Bearing ffrom here didnt lead to control around 60m away. Very vague around here and lot of fallen trees etc. Eventually relocated off the open area to S and found control from there. MUst ahve been there or thereabouts. Lost maybe 4min.
6 was just a slog through rough forest slope with lots of debris.
Quite pleased with 8 and 9 - slow and steady but accurate.
#10 was a nightmare. Took the "easy" path option and was fine until missed a path off to the left and ended up "lost" but on a path for the first time in a while. Interestingly Amelia made exactly the same error in the daylight so the path junction must have been very vague.
Managed to relocate using a marsh and found I was not too far from 10 after all. Lost maybe 8-10 min on this one depending on how fast I was along the path.
11 was trickier than it looked - very tentative uphill on bearing.
12 should have been straightforward but missed the large feature on a bearing from the fence conrenr and eventually found it from the North!!
13 was fine although not convinced I ever found the "path" and 14 was just a slog.
#15 was OK
#16 was really poor control for me. Lost probably 4min on a very short leg. I'd really need to see this again in the daylight but wasnt convinced even when I found the control among the bracken that I was in the right place. Assuming it was I definitely was reading the contours incorrectly. It seemed to be on the highest point on the hill top which the map suggests it isnt. Anyhow had a good faff about in view of the finish crown before finding it and trundling off to find the last control in pretty poor spirits although glad just to be finished.
