Conditions

Ottawa has had a good early season with a nice base of snow, so we expect all the trails at our various locations to be open with good coverage. Closer to the event, we will reassess snow conditions and let people know what to expect. January in Ottawa averages -10°C (14°F) but can range from -25°C (-13°F) to 0°C (32°F).

Equipment

Due to the nature of the sport, it is recommended that participants bring rock skis as well as their regular skis, especially if there is not a lot of snow. We will let people know what the snow conditions are leading up to the weekend.

The Sunday meet will offer SI Air timing, so participants can use their own SIAC chip if they have one.

Fees/Registration

Registration for the Saturday and Sunday training sessions is by email to robert.jaroslav.graham@gmail.com. Please include which sessions you will be attending. Payment for Saturday and Sunday training sessions ONLY will be collected on the day by cash or cheque made payable to “Ottawa Orienteering Club”. Friday, January 25th

Our first session will be on the Sir John A. MacDonald Winter Trail near downtown Ottawa. Parking is anywhere along Columbine Driveway and we will meet in the open area near there. We will meet at 17:30 and start soon after. Be sure to bring headlamps as the trail does not have much lighting. There will be flags set out but no electronic timing. Be advised there may not be anywhere to hang out indoors. Snowshoeing, running, and fatbiking are allowed for this session, but please do not damage the classic ski tracks.

Any participant who do not want to ski are welcome to snowshoe, run, or fatbike for this session only, as SJAM is a multi-use pathway. We only ask that you do not damage the classic ski tracks. Snowshoeing, running, or fatbiking is NOT allowed for the Nakkertok or Wesley Clover events.

The trail network runs along the Ottawa River on what are bike paths in the summer. It is very flat with many open areas.

Saturday, January 26th

We will be holding two training sessions at Nakkertok to take advantage of the excellent trail network. Parking is in a lot off Gatineau Ave. Do not continue down the road toward the main Nakkertok cabin. Our meeting and lunch point is at Johaneshus Cabin about 300m West from the lot. It has tables and chairs and is heated by a wood stove. There is no running water and only outhouses are available.

We will have a morning and an afternoon training session. Again, there will be flags but no electronic timing. Be advised that Nakkertok hosts many ski programs so the trails may be quite busy especially close to the main arena further north. Please be respectful to other skiers using these trails.

Nakkertok has a very dense trail network with lots of steep ups and downs and tight turns. It is an incredibly fun and technical map perfect for ski orienteering.

No snowshoeing is allowed at Nakkertok, skiing only.

Course setter Marketa Graham

Sunday, January 27th

This will be a ski orienteering race held at Wesley Clover Parks Campground. There is a cabin where participants can register, change, warm up, etc. There will be SI timing, we will also have SI Air so participants are encouraged to use SIAC chips if they have them.

Snowshoeing is allowed for this race, however, please stay well off to the side of the trails and do not step on the classic ski tracks.

More details to come.
