Before Signing Up--Please Read

Before you sign up. This is a free will event. If you don't like how we do things, then please don't sign up. We're not the Rock and Roll Series, the Boston Marathon, or the Ironman Group. If you're looking to be pampered or celebrated, we are not the race for you. We are simply trail runners putting on a trail race for ourselves and other trail runners. Our main goal is to provide a challenging and scenic course through the remote forest in the Pa Wilds. Everything else if just "fluff". And we give very little attention to this "fluff". We like to keep our events simple--sign up, show up, line up, hurry up, finish up, eat and drink up, and then re-up the next year. If you're the "needy" type with high expectations, please reconsider our event. There are plenty of other events out there in which to run. If we offend you by our rhetoric, then you obviously don't know us and therefore, should reconsider signing up. But if you're into chewing up some dirt alongside 1000 of your best friends, then sign up and join the party!!!

Be aware that we have cut-offs for this event. We want our last aid station (top of SOB) shut down by 4pm. Our first cut-off will be mile 9. You have until 2:30pm to reach the top of Johnson Run Trail.
If you do not agree with this system, please do not sign up. This is a rugged trail race and we understand that not everyone can complete this course. But we expect all registered 25K runners/hikers to finish in under 9 hours. The 50K in under 10 hours.

Registration Rules

Registration opens May 1st and is open to the first 1000 runners for the 25K and 300 for the 50K. In the event that the race fills to capacity, we'll start a wait list. That wait list will run until Feb.20th. But after the 20th, ALL registration issues will be laid to rest. Any runner wishing to bail out before Feb.20th can cancel via ultrasignup or email us at patraildogs@yahoo.com and get $30.00 back until Feb. 20th. The next person on the wait list will be invited in. There are NO BIB TRANSFERS NO SWITCHES, NO DEFERRALS, NO BANDITS for this event. Again, if you do not like this policy, please don't sign up!!!

Description

Welcome to the 13th annual Hyner View Trail Challenge. For those of you who have taken on the Challenge in the past....Welcome Back!!! For those "newbies" out there....get ready for the ride of your life. The course is set up to challenge each individual both mentally and physically. There are three major climbs and three major descents over a course filled with vistas, stream crossings, and single track paths. The HVTC 25K is part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series and the 50K is part of the PA Triple Crown of Mountain Running.

The HVTC 25K has a cap of 1000 total runners or a deadline date of Feb. 20th....whichever occurs first. Registration opens May 1st, but please don't wait too long. The 50K, offered to experienced runners only, is capped at 300 runners and starts at 8am. Runners are expected to traverse the course in 10 hours or less. The 50K is not to be hiked as you'll never finish in time. You must list a qualifying time that shows you can finish in under 10 hours. Please see below for Qualifying Standards. The 25K, open to runners and hikers alike, starts at 9am and has cut-off times in place to ensure a sub 9 hour finish. Hikers must reach the mile 9 aid station by 2:30pm. That is a 1.6 MPH pace which is more than generous.
Parking is across the street at the airfield as usual. There will be no parking at the WCSA clubhouse near the start/finish. Please arrive early on race day to pick up race bag and bib as registration will end at 8:30am in order to get everyone across the street to the start line.

Spectator Access

Very important....the course is very remote and there are no parking areas whatsoever out there. And the mountain roads are very narrow. The ONLY accessible aid station is Hyner View State Park at mile 4. Please relay this to family and friends.

50K Qualifying Standards

Qualifying standards are in place to ensure both the safety of the runners as well as the consideration of our volunteers on the course. The Hyner 50K is not an entry level course. It is not intended for everyone to be able to participate. If you're worried about cut-offs, then maybe reconsider this event. There are tons of entry level 50K's out there.

Must show one of the following

  • Must have completed the Hyner 25K course in 4.5 hours or less. Or Hyner 50K in under 10 hours. No exceptions.
  • Any 50K in under 9 hours, or any other 25K in under 4 hours.
  • Any trail half marathon in under 3 hours. Examples--Dam Half, Chief Wetona, Hyner Half, the Raven, and others
  • Boulder Beast or Mega in under 8.5 hours.
  • Any other race that shows you can finish in under 10 hours. Road races DO NOT count. Sorry. They have no relevance to trail running in the PA Wilds.

Missed getting into Hyner?

Hey everyone, if you missed getting into the Hyner Challenge this year, check out some of our other great events. The PA Trail Dogs also organize the Rothrock Trail Challenge in State College, the Sproul 10K at Hyner, the Hyner Half at Hyner, the Boulder Beast in Lock Haven, and the Wilds 25K at Little Pine State Park. Registration for all these races are currently open via ultrasignup and expect to fill up quickly this year. See you on the trails soon!!!!
