ORIENTEERING in escarpment and limestone pavement terrain is not only rocky (ROCK) but it is technically difficult (HARD). So GHO put the two together to get the HARD ROCK ORIENTEERING RACE. This race is a long distance race in navigationally challenging terrain with lots of rock - in fact almost all of the checkpoints are located on ROCK features (cliffs, boulders, rocky ground,...).
