Notes from the mapper and Day 1 course setter Bob Burg

“Of all the terrain I’ve mapped and set courses in, Mountain Lakes is by far my favorite – orienteering heaven for both runner and course setter. So we promise wonderful courses….since every direction you turn you find open runnable terrain.

No shoe-horning courses into sparsely available territory, no need to creatively avoid all the nastiest areas – there are precious few. Dramatic reentrants and cliff-laced spurs everywhere, rolling terraced hillsides with flat grassy mountain tops. Plentiful picturesque lakes and upland seasonally dry marshes that are easy to navigate, challengingly intricate systems of stonewalls in some areas, hard to find in others. And did we mention really, really open white woods?

So we invite you to discover the newest treasure in HVO’s repertoire of venues. Imagine the changing colors the last weekend in October, an inviting staging area with dramatic Finish leg for great spectating, in a modern rustic Westchester County Camp. Hope to see you in the woods. ”

How can you afford to miss it. Registration. here

I had the pleasure to visit the park with one of the course setters 2 weeks ago. I was just around start/finish area, and will say that is one of the best venue locations in local parks, that I know.
Somewhat similar to Moreau Lake, but more open, sunnier. Not as much parking space.

Here is a little more encouragement to come to the "Love the Lakes" A-meet.

In late October, after all the important O-events have taken out a good chunk of your motivation and adrenaline, after the US has beaten Canada, there comes a simple A-meet with a simple goal of providing a joyful orienteering experience. No, the courses will not be easy but because Mountain Lakes in South Salem, New York is such a magical place, there is no doubt that you will enjoy and remember your time here.

There are open areas that free your soul / legs. There are technical Harriman-like patches where those liberated legs will have to slow down for you to read the map. There are stone walls, and tiny reentrants, and tiny houses, and all of it is a lot of fun to navigate through. Join HVO and WCOC for two days of wonderful orienteering!

Not enticing enough? Then check out our (amateur) promotional video which starts with the finish and ends with pure bliss.

Given the plethora of orienteering over these two weeks we have decided to keep normal registration open until after NAOC. So you have plenty of time to realize that 3 A meets in one month will not break the bank or the back and that it is time to run on a map with both plenty of rock features and plenty of altitude change.

Normal registration will now close at 1 a.m. on Tuesday October 14th; as soon as we can find the webmaster, who appears to have gone bush, the web site will reflect this.

It should be amazing. I'd cross the Atlantic to race something like this!

I have adjusted the EventReg configuration so that late fees will not kick in until next Tuesday (10/14) morning at 5am ET. I had already bumped it to this Thursday (10/09), so they did not kick in this morning.

Besides the cluster of A-events, the event website had been either down or defective (link to registration not functioning) on several occasions, so some folks trying to register might have met with frustration.

I also noticed that no Canadians had registered, leading me to hypothesize that those in Ottawa had simply been swamped with NAOC prep. I would certainly not want to penalize anyone, who really deserves to be able to enjoy an event without NAOC responsibilities on their minds.
