unfit then why do tempo ?
I thought the same thing about the news.
I watched the stuff about MH17 hoping the next item would be less horrific. "And now for further news. The Israelis have started a ground offensive...."
Off.

I can't decide if it's better just not to read it and be ignorant or to read it and be upset.

For the training stuff - I signed up for a trail marathon in October. Aim is to get round, no heroics, nothing special. So main training is a building long run at the weekend. I thought I'd try to do a couple of higher paced things during the week. If you think that approach could be improved though, I'm very happy to hear it!

based on the amount of running you've done this year / recent weeks I'd suggest that you spend the first half of the time between now and then just building up volume through steady / easy running - gentle, enjoyable pace.
If you are using HRM - zone 2 and nudging zone 3 is all.
Don't push just trot - no expectations or goals. If you can get out regularly it soon ( 3 or 4 weeks) starts to feel more comfortable. if you take a qualitative mental note of how quickly/easily it feels like you are going up a certain hill for example then you'll soon notice qualitative improvements. Don't worry about speed.

Have a think about how much is a decent volume - time wise, in relation to how long you think the marathon is likely to take you. What volume can you sensibly fit in in a week ?
Once you have build up that decent volume then introduce tempo in the second half, first once a week, then twice.

ooh which trail marathon? Sounds fun!

Doesn't make sense to me that HR would be low when out of shape. To me that usually indicates exhaustion.

Good luck in your build-up!

Nipmuck! I was so intent on finding a marathon that I didn't realise it was the same day as the Classic Champs! Guess I figured out my priorities without actually thinking about them :s

Kitch - I'm kind of bored of trotting and in this heat and humidity it feels worse to me than banging out a faster session where something else hurts more than the general heat induced discomfort! I've been doing quite a lot of trotting recently and it's fun when I can get out to nice places to run at the weekends, but not great during the week. While I completely get that approach and realise it probably makes more sense, is there anything to lose by doing at least one session a bit faster from the start? I'm thinking 3 days of complete rest from running per week regardless of the plan.

Not sure at the moment how long it's going to take me. In a couple of weeks when I have a slightly longer weekend run to do I will go investigate the trail, as it depends to some extent on how gnarly it is. If it's pretty runnable, then maybe 11 minute miles. Clint, you might have something to say on this! From previous winning times (3.50ish for women) I'm presuming it's not the gnarliest that CT has to offer but not all plain sailing either.

You can of course do tempo now, though it has less of an aerobic base to build from - its about value for effort. Its not going to do any harm.

It's the Middle (Oct 5th), not Classic champs (they're in CO next month), but anyway, sounds like a good race to get excited about. I've never run a marathon (or half for that matter) and don't plan to start now.

When my foot was feeling better I would do some base mileage and/or cross training, intervals (~400s), and tempo scheduled into one week. You can't call me an expert but it worked for awhile. Then just build up your longer runs on weekends when you need to decompress from work. Northeast US summers aren't the best for good running training if you're not acclimated (or otherwise feeling blah).

The trail will be gnarly - rooty, rocky, single track but moderate ups and downs. Typical of most CT blue trails. Haven't run that section though, just seen it from the trail heads driving by. Would be fun running but not necessarily with two way traffic racing it.
