Reactions to food any time you eat it, or only after exercise?
Either way, be careful. Reactions can get (suddenly) more serious. (as I found out a while ago)
Dunno. I can see now I need to pay more attention to it. Did you get an allergy test done?
Maybe have a chat to Anna Sheldon as well AP - Bomb.
I've had some done, but not very helpful for that particular problem. Turns out I'm mildly allergic to lots of stuff (and have sensitive skin, so skin tests are just plain irritating).
Fortunately, due to bad eating habits (500mL tub of yoghurt for lunch, nothing but peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, big milo before training after no lunch) I was pretty easily able to link most of my milder episodes to either milk or peanuts. As long as I avoid those for 4 hours before exercise I'm all good. Can be slightly longer than 4 hours if I've been sick and I'm not digesting things well - it's gotten to the stage when I can pretty much tell by how my stomach is feeling whether there's any chance anything could go wrong.
Being a food allergy rather than an intolerance it's a protein thing (or so the specialist tells me), so bread, jam, fruit etc seems to be fine, so that's what's on the pre-race menu for me.
Generally only a minor inconvenience, especially as the first specialists advice was that if we couldn't find the trigger, I'd be well advised to stop exercising...
Had thought it was an intolerance but did the FODMAP thing a while ago with a dietitian and still felt really sick on the diet when eating oats (which in FODMAPS is supposed to be an OK food). After I cut them out I felt much better. I have had some oats recently, which was dumb, and got the same indigestion / breathing feeling harder when running symptoms. Yesterday when my lips swelled up I ate dried cranberries and almonds just before running but also had a late lunch a couple of hours before.
Yeah, wondered about the allergy testing because Damien got it done and it showed him as being mildly allergic to almost everything too. Sounds like it's not worth doing. Will watch the protein intake now before running! Thanks for the advice Steve.
