Is this what you saw?

Ye-es, I think it must be. It didn't continue (to my eyes) into the sun, and it was higher up in the sky than the ones google images proposes, but I guess that's just because it was midday in 'summer'. As in, most of the examples show circles close to the horizon, this one was much closer to overhead. Good to have a name for it.
Still doesn't make sense :)
