Discussion: container of ice cream

PBricker: It was a full pint of ice cream, about 1100 calories, which you polished off in short measure while driving on the highway (look ma, no hands!).

Isn't it about time to stop mucking around and get serious with training? Are the FDF's out on Toby? I got hit bad today on the Frost.

PG: But it was really good. And I'm down 5 pounds since then (and 11 pounds in the last three months), so it must be slimming.

My training is going just right (seriously). The plan is to get my legs stronger, but only gradually try running any faster. Therefore the hikes with a pack on (and by the top of Toby, I am really working hard). Mixed in with biking, yesterday's ride felt pretty good. And more running will filter in, just don't want to do too much too soon.

No FDF's yet on Toby. Is this the year we are going to lose all our inhibitions and put on the sticky blue hats?

PBricker: Sounds (surprisingly) reasonable. Maybe a bike ride ...

Wyatt: I hope you do the sticky paper run, and count the FDFs you collect....

PG: I'd say the odds are very high that it's going to happen. I'm old enough and have enough self-esteem (ha!), well, maybe willingness under the right circumstances to look really foolish, that I can deal with whatever strange looks the locals might give. The question is whether I can get Phil to join me.

Here are the details and some testimonials.

Pictures please!!

ebuckley: We should get together a whole bunch of the "no self esteem crowd" (e.g., David Frei) and run the Chubb with these on our heads.

bill_l: Let me know when.... but have to find some cheap blue hats first.

How does the cup attach to the hat?

#  Posted 2007-06-14 21:21:22
jjcote: I don't think you particularly want the hat to be blue, just the cup. And it attaches with some kind of wire dealie so that it keeps boppin' and bouncin' around, which is part of the secret, I believe.

#  Posted 2007-06-14 21:54:46
cmorse: From what I've heard, just a blue hat with tanglefoot smothered on it should do the trick. I'm not convinced the bobble factor is significant, particularly if the hat is in motion anyway.

Another option would be to attach one or more blue sticky cards (3x5) that are already covered with sticky stuff. Typically used for monitoring Thrips populations in greenhouses.

jjcote: The advantage of having just the cup (or card, excellent idea!) be blue and sticky is that you can dispose of it and use another one next time. I don't relish the thought of having a sticky blue hat that is increasingly covered with dead FDFs as the season progresses.

evancuster: I'm from California where we don't have these pests. Are deerflys and blackflys the same critters?

#  Posted 2007-06-15 07:01:05
Charlie: No, blackflies are even nastier, in my opinion, although deerflies are certainly bad enough. Deerflies are bigger, so it is more satisfying to squish them.

#  Posted 2007-06-15 08:09:32
jjcote: The winged trio: black fly, mosquito, and FDF. As Steve Tarry says, "Mosquitoes suck, but black flies chew!". And deerflies apparently slice you open and let you bleed.

bubo: I read in the Wikipedia article: The best way to treat a (FDF) bite is with alcohol to prevent infection.

Does that mean I should be drinking it??

#  Posted 2007-06-15 15:44:59
Jagge: Yes, and you should also eat some makkara with it. Makkara will not heal the bite, but is just so damn good.

Charlie: I had a transcendental blackfly experience back in '92 when I participated in a sort of ultra-rogaine race up in northern Quebec called Mahikan, up above the giant reservoir Manic 5. I made the apparently unfortunate choice of a blue shirt for this occasion. My headnet served only to keep the inside blackflies separate from the outside ones. Breathing had to be done through clenched teeth to keep them from attacking my tongue. I had scars that lasted over six months along the waistband, at my neck and at my wrists.

ebuckley: Waaaaay back in my mispent youth I was in a bike race in Upstate NY on a circuit course that had a crazy steep uphill right through FDF territory. The feed zone was about a mile before the climb. One kid in the race had left his water bottles with his mom and sisters with instructions that they were to hand him the yellow bottles (water & honey) and squirt him down with the white bottles (just water). Well, as you might guess, they got it wrong and poured the honey and water all over him. On the FDF climb he was attacked with a vegence usually reserved for B-grade movies.
