Club Championships Competition Details added

Get your clubmates registered! There are still many age groups thinly contested for easy points. Results page has the current registrations. Local club is leading so far but there are lots of points to be awarded at the races.
(The entries marked as Other for club are most likely from other countries and will be sorted at a later time)

Awards will be presented to the top clubs in each category. We hope that this can carry on into the future.

Anything could happen on the Middle so cheer your clubmates on.

Also RouteGadget is up for Sprint and Long, share your routes.

Any update on club standings after the middle distance?

Yes, it is there at the same link. QOC prevails by a slim margin over NEOC for overall and in the AAA club category.

Subtle point: I registered for the US Champs in March, but I changed my primary club to NEOC to run on the NEOC relay team in April. At present, my OUSA primary club is still NEOC. Do my points count for NEOC or CSU, the club I originally registered as?

Frankly, you club swappers are a pain in the butt. ;). Love doing the rankings...NEOC WCOC CSU - which way is the wind blowing today?

The scoring was based on the club shown in the results. If you wanted to represent NEOC, then you needed to ask to be that club in the results.

Only the top seven in each class scored...

I aim to misbehave. Thanks for putting this together, and sorry for the inconvenience!

Top 7 in each class scored for rank points, but your club also earns points for each runner competing in an age class.

Thanks go to Tyler. Forgot about the other part about runner points. So, would NEOC had been 3 points higher, if Ian had registered as NEOC?
Oct 8, 2014 9:26 PM #
Delyn:
Runner points are calculated [ 10 * ln (# of runs) ] so Ian's 3 runs could have made the NEOC run total 54 and given them 40 points instead of 39, so don't worry, you didn't cause your second club to miss a tie for first.

So, I'm going to out myself and admit that I have no idea what that formula means. I also asked a few folks at the meet, and no one had any idea how the Runner points were calculated. Can someone explain it in layman's terms?

What does it mean in the long run? Did EMPO win anything as top AA club? Or is this just a fun statistical exercise?

I assume it's the "ln" in [10 * ln (# of runs)] that is the confusing part. The ln is the natural logarithm. I assume it's being used in the formula because it's a function that grows less quickly than other functions so that you get some advantage to having lots of runners but not twice as much for having twice as many runners. So, for example, ln(1)=0, ln(10)=2.3 and ln(20)=3.0.

But I didn't make up the formula so can only guess why it is what it is.

It was intended to be announced at the Awards on Sunday, but that was pushed forward on the day and there were still people to finish. There were a few in the top 3 for metals but that was mostly decided as long as they finish. By the time I could have got the results Awards were wrapped up...
I think the plan is to eventually get the awards to the clubs sometime.

@kissy
The ln is the natural logarithm. Logarithms are the inverse of exponents. So this way everyone counts for points but as the larger clubs have more members each additional run counts for fewer points, so the larger clubs don't just run away with it based only on number of members at the meet.

10 * ln(x)
x = number or runs you club has
y = points earned
You might have to zoom and pan a bit to get the idea. the horizontal and/or vertical zoom can be selected by the flyout options in the corner.
or you can put a number in for x and it will give you the points earned.

Why that was picked?
With 3 races and and a max score of 49 from rank points (have each of your 7 top scoring runners win their age group and score 7 points each)
I wanted the runner points to be about 1/4 of the total points. So to score 49 runner points a club would need to have 45 runners at each race in their age class. This seemed about right with the largest of clubs and left the scale factor at an even 10 after taking ln(x).

In layman's terms, [10 * ln (# of runs)] means that you look at the total number of runs, see how many digits are in that number, subtract 1, and multiply by 23.

So if there were 10 runs, that's 2 digits, and 1 * 23 = 23.
For 100 runs, that's 3 digits, and 2 * 23 = 46.
If you're in between, say 32 runs, well, that's 2.5 digits, and 1.5 * 23 is about 35.

The "ln" function takes care of smoothly telling you how many digits there are when the number isn't exactly 10 or 100 or 1000, but something in between that's partway to adding the next digit. Fancy calculators have a button for it that usually gives an inscrutable looking number.

(You might think that 50 would be 2.5 digits, but that's 2.7 digits. The explanation starts to get beyond layman's terms at this point.)

Thank you. And, yes, I have calculator with an ln button, so I'll just use that from now on. :-)

All I understood from all of this was that QOC IS THE CHAMPION!! and, thank goodness that kissy abandoning QOC just prior to the event didn't affect the results. Just kidding, Kris!!

QOC, EMPO and CSU are the 2014 Club Champions. Complete results at

Thanks to Tyler Borden for devising the concept and computing the results.

Plaques will be presented to the winning clubs at the HVO/WCOC meet on October 25th.

I assume we'll receive plaques, otherwise we'll pass on the award. :-)

OOPS!!! Would like to see the plaques passed on to other clubs next year rather than the plague

Sorry for the mistake.
