The first preview release of OpenOrienteering Mapper for Android is available now. With live GPS display, free-hand scribbling and digital compass support, it focuses on mobile surveying. Maps can be easily transferred to the device for surveying, and back to a PC for the final drawing. The full announcement and the download links are here: http://oorienteering.sourceforge.net/?p=186
The linked ticket is for the implementation of GPS support in general, so I'd say open a new ticket.
Normally the only reason for the GPS button being disabled should be the map not being georeferenced. Does your map have a valid non-"local" georeferencing?
