I totally messed up on 2 (the shorter route was definitely not faster or easier)

Looking at RouteGadget, it looks like the fast guys (Eric, Will, Magnus, Nikolay), all took the shorter route to #2, so I think the route was good for speed/distance, but riskier if you make a mistake.

almost lost my shoe in the mud a couple of times

Excellent! That's what a Bog Slog is about! I never lost any shoes, either, but I made sure to wear by bombproof boots every time I went out there (scouting, taping, setting).

I definitely need to work on my bush wacking skills.

It takes practice and a lot of confidence. I don't think I'm very good at it, but I'm better than some people, I guess. The elites are really good. I don't know how they do it.

I survived and finished though, with a couple of nice bruises to show for it!

Good work persevering! Gina and I have some bruises, too. There aren't many rocks out there, and it seems like when I fell, I always managed to fall on a rock, haha.

I agree on the bushwhacking thing. I felt rather slow-moving through parts of it, and wiped out multiple times. It was part of the fun, though!
