There are flights conections between Greenland and the following countries: Canada, Iceland and Denmark.

From Canada:
You can book the fligth from Iqaluit to Nuuk the 30'th of June and then from Nuuk to Ilulissat the 1'st of July. There are flights between Ottawa and Iqaluit. See www.airgreenland.gl. Return the same way back.

From Iceland:
Book the flight from Reykjavik to Ilulissat the 28'th of June. Return from Ilulissat the 7'th of July. See www.airiceland.is

From Denmark:
No problem. There are flights from Copehagen to Kangerlusuaq and from Kangerlusuaq to Ilulissat seven days a week.

Hope this help your planning.

I went to Greenland this year for orienteering - it was amazing. I recommend it it.

Travelling to there is a bear though. We found teh Iqaluit connection to be too expensive and too tricky. Instead, we flew to Copenhagen and then back - crazy as it seems this was cheaper for us as we were continuing to Europe afterwards anyway. And very straightforward to plan, on mainstream airlines.

On the way back - we had to abandon our trip to Europe because of flooding back home - we flew from Iceland to Halifax and then home. This was very easy, so I suspect an easy and possibly (relatively) cheap option would be to fly to Iceland and then backwards to Greenland.

In a nutshell:

Canada - Copenhagen - Greenland. This is long, lots of flying, but not totally out of the question, especially if you will continue to Europe afterwards.

Canada - Iceland - Greenland. This is fairly quick, and might be a good price.

Canada - Greenland. This was tricky and expensive when we tried to book it, but still it seems that logically this should be the best way to go.

I was trying to plan it for this year, and the Ottawa-Iqaluit-Nuuk option seemed unreliable schedule-wise and extraordinarily expensive. I may just piggyback a trip to Reykjavik instead.

It looks like some of my problems with trying to find flights for this past summer had to do with not realizing that Iceland has two similarly-named airlines:

Icelandair - which can take me to Reykjavik straight from Toronto
Air Iceland - which is regional and flies straight to Ilulissat - thanks for mentioning this, Morten - otherwise I'd still be trying to fly to Ilulissat by Icelandair. :)

I'd like to catch Reykjavik's ICE-O from June 27-29 before AMO. And luckily there is a flight from R. to I. on July 1, so I can do both meets. I'm so excited!

Best pricing I've found so far is ~ $900 round trip Toronto-Reykjavik, and ~ $1,200 round trip Reykjavik-Ilulissat.

If you have time, spend a bit more in Iceland and see some of the sights. Icelandic Air doesn't charge extra if you spend less than a week on the stopover and even the "touristy" things like the waterfalls are absolutely spectacular.

Yup, for Iceland I'll have the 3 Ice-O days, plus another 4-5 before/after Ilulissat - maybe even more days prior to IceO, we'll see. This is a costly trip, so I will definitely make the most of it! And besides, Lonely Planet tells me that Ilulissat itself is the place to be for visiting Greenland.

Flight from Reykjavik to Ilulissat is booked! Hurray!

For anyone considering this route by Air Iceland, there are still seats on Tuesday July 1, but not for the few days before that. So that might be the last chance to get to the races, unless there are seats on flights the week before. The first race start is in the evening, so there's always Wednesday!

FYI, bike transport by both Air Iceland (local) and Icelandair (international) is incredibly cheap at $35-$40 per trip. Might bring my MTB to Iceland!
