I had very similar problem running sprint last week in Stanford University - head turned on only after second control, no matter how slow I've ran (just walk trying to decipher map with small of success). Some 500m hard warm-up before start with map would helped a lot (or maybe not).

I will start adding technical warm-up from now-on will see how it works, but that was only a small part of today’s failure

hmm... the less i think about the course and the competition the better it comes out - at least works for me... I do though go over tecnical elements when, I am being called, such as read ahead, look for left, right, and straight routes, know which way to leave the bad, and keep your bearing by looking for "that" tree (that's my technique) and oh don't look at other pple..... that's about it I think...

I am also comparing maps from 1995 and 2007 - the printing decision made in 2007 produced good quality map but significantly more difficult to comprehend for me on a run - I will bring it up to Vlad, when I get a chance

We already talked about it Grisha - we both need glasses :) I guess we are old enough to comprehend this fact :)
