It makes so much more sense to call them "law-regulators" than som old greek word that has lost its original meaning.

Yes, it makes sense - the thing which interests me is that they've largely kept foreign words out of the language when other countries which have attempted to do that (e.g. French) have had only partial success. Probably has a lot to do with being a small homogeneous society, and until recently a fairly isolated one.
