Article about the current status of Adventure Racing as a sport, here. I find the subtle differences in ARs races from various locations around the US to be quite interesting. It's as if in the absence of the big races, Eco, Primal, Raid, etc., each region of the country have sort of come up with their own formula for the ideal race format.

Yes, there is definitely regional variations, and it is the market that sorts this all out. But, I'm going out on a limb here to create a new category - the (trademark be damned) expedition style (exploration) races such as Extreme that involve real wilderness skills and the "interface" races that have you hovering around large human populations and sharing trails with folks hiking with their baby strollers. There will always be less of a market for the one vs. the other.
