Most definitely an obsession. Also a heck of a lot of fun.

On the US orienteering site, address given by simmo above , go to the Education page and learn all about it.

Blake, so if you've never heard of orienteering, what led you to this site??

BTW - orienteering is the activity around which the universe revolves.

It's mostly about putting little plastic things into holes and listening for a beep.

It's about having good time running in the woods when it rains.. and looking for a small markers to prove you finished the course. :D

it's fun!!! (I am married to an orienteer) - basically, they are trying to get around a course from "control" to "control" (think of controls as treasures you are hunting for, given a map, and a few coded clues on the map, fun , huh?! treasure after treasure, and it's a race too! For some reason there seems to be a tendency to avoid mentioning it is a treasure hunt, but it is, Blake, really ;-) they run around in the deep bush, just crashing straight through whatever is there - swamps, up over mountains, bushes, forests... of course, they DO make choices based on the map of the area; sometimes there is a convenient path that helps out - but the two main deals are (1) deciding which route is gonna be fastest (for example, long way around on the path, or straight thru the forest fighting and crashing) and (2) being fit enough to run hard, and fight hard against the bush/elevation gain/etc, AND still have enough oxygen in your brain to see where you are on the map & make the right choices. It's pretty tricky!!

First of all it is fun! But be aware that that it can be highly addictive. I am pretty new to it and now I just can't seem to stop. Give it a try, at your own risk.

Blake- yes how did you find Attackpoint? and as everyone said orienteering is Addictive!!! my dad got me into when i was very very little (maybe 2 or 3) and have been doing it ever since (15 now)

There are many levels to orienteering. White and yellow are beginner, orange is intermediate, and brown green red and blue are the advanced courses. beginner courses are mostly on trails, intermediate is one big linear features (big things like streams, line of cilffs, and walls that are obvious) and advanced courses are well lets say sometimes there isn't much around to navigate by (or like at the past HVO's meet Too Many rocks)

you should definitely come out and try it. I have learned so much both about navigation and maps and life lessons.
