Hello Orienteers,

Does anyone out there have any thoughts the best way to give out maps at orienteering relays? There are those who say to put it an envelope. Others prefer the elastic band and yet more suggest a sticker to hold it closed?

Any elites out there have any preferences?

Lots of relays in Scandi countries, why not look at what they do there?

What kind of relay is it

Envelopes are easy for low key relays. You hand the envelope out to the runner when they check into the holding area. Just make sure you cut a corner prior to sealing it for easy access to the map. Also work better with Pretex. You are less likely to rip the map while getting to it.

We either use the washing line approach (maps hung in team number order, cannot take it until the start) or the rolled up around a stick approach. The first approach means you need someone replacing maps on the washing line after each runner's been through (unless you have a multi-lined washing line) but the second lets you set them all up beforehand, wrapped with an elastic band with the map facing inwards.

I like it when they are stapled or otherwise attached to a board on the ground. Grab and go at the gun.
