Discussion: Tiomila 2007

This year's Tiomila is this Saturday, and I'm planning to watch the online video coverage. I can't find a link for the video yet, but I did find the start times of the various relays and converted them into New York City time (EDT) and Sydney time, and posted it in the Tiomila event announcement on Attackpoint.

If you see errors in my time conversions or if you find a link to the online coverage, please post it here. The NYC and Sydney times are based on the assumption that the local time at Tiomila is the same as Stockholm.

The time in Sweden when I write this is 10:22 AM. With the time noted on AP for this post you should be able to figure out the time difference.

Sweden is usually on GMT +1, but is now on Daylight Savings Time.

Big thanks to bubo and blairtrewin for help verifying the time conversions. The times have been double-checked, so if they're wrong, I screwed up twice.

The only missing piece of information now is a link to the online coverage. If you see an online link appear on the Tiomila website, please post it in this thread.

There are no links for the online coverage available yet on the Tiomila website.
I´ll keep an eye open and post it here if it shows up before I leave home on Saturday morning...

I am afraid of high places. Hopefully it's dark and I can't see down when I have to use this bridge:

It's looking like the online coverage links won't be posted until immediately before the coverage, which is 30 minutes prior to the start of the Youth Relay.

There is a new News item at http://www.10mila.se/ that says:

Internet coverage at 10MILA

At www.10mila.se you will be able to follow all races during the weekend.

Web-TV
When our Big Screen is started just before the youngsters start, our internet broadcast will also start. Preliminar broadcast times are Saturday 10.30 - Sunday 12.00. A marathon broadcast!

For you at home there has to be some kind of broadband connection to your computer. On your computer you have to have Windows Media Player or similar software installed. Our Web-TV is broad casted in cooperation with Qbrick.

Sound
There will also be a possibility to listen to only speaker sound from 10MMILA. Shoutcast technics is used for that.

Results
Like last year is our hope to give you close reports with updated results. Depending on how much load there are on our servers we will update results with interval from 30 seconds to one minute.
We will use about four different result servers to balance the load of data. Links to results will be published on Saturday.

Pictures and reports
After each relay is finished we will write some small report and upload some pictures. Perhaps we also will publish some short movie from the relay.

Nice broadcast! Congratulations to Halden for another dominating victory. What a finish between Kalevan Rasti and SNO! I thought that SNO easily had it, but Thierry caught Losman right at the line.

Tynomite:
If Thierry caught Losman at the line, how come there is a 11second time difference? is it a real time start past the line? Very exciting finish though.

During the early daylight legs, I was thinking they weren't showing enough maps and GPS tracks. I wonder if they were keeping the courses from the later runners?

I was really impressed with the 10th-leg course. Wow.

Boris ran a great race! His team is in about 40th place right now and Boris ran the fastest time on the 9th leg for Linné, so cool! Marc had a tough job to complete out there, but did it well. What else can you do in such a situation than fight fight fight (against 10 other very good orienteers). I am proud:-)

11 seconds difference: in a relay (or any race with a mass start), the order is important, not the time. The referee on the finish line makes the runners punch in the order they arrive. There is no cell or no punch to give a precise time.

cedarcreek: can you correct the listing for Jukola 08 to Tampere from Helsinki? I think Stockholm may well be closest in Attackpoint's placenames database for Sigtuna, but Tampere certainly exists and is a lot closer to the 2008 Jukola than Helsinki is.

I missed the broadcast - is it possible to download parts of if from somewhere?
Apr 29, 2007 10:26 PM #
cedarcreek:
I recommend you go to the contacts tab of the Tiomila website, and e-mail the webmaster. You'd think it would be very easy to make *something* available.

I noticed the quality of the images got worse and worse as Europe woke up Sunday morning. I wonder if the streaming video servers got hit hard, or if it was some other sort of problem.

I fell asleep for 30 minutes at the 9-10 transition, and I'd like to watch that plus the poor quality sections (basically the end) again.

This is among the lamest things I've ever done, but since mindsweeper and Spike missed it, and because I took a few screenshots during the event, I made a little page with about 22 photos on it. They're really small downloads, even if you click through to the big image.

Tiomila broadcast screenshots

The first one was when I tried taking a screenshot.

The next two are early morning starters with LED headlamps. I was surprised by that---I guess there was enough light to run, but not enough to read the map.

The rest were just stuff I noticed. I do favor OK Linne runners. One blurry photo at the end is Tero outsprinting Losman, but you can't see anything.

I fell asleep for the first 20 or 30 minutes of leg 10, and when I woke up, one of the first things I saw was the uneven butterflies, which I hadn't seen anywhere earlier in the broadcast. I was wondering if the course was unexpected to any of the leg 10 runners.

I wonder what the center butterfly control was like when the bulk of the relay teams were there.

The screenshots are pretty nice - thanks! The Winsplits look pretty excited, so I'm looking forward to seeing the maps in Runoway or RouteGadget. (37 controls!!!)

The center butterfly control had a video feed, and it was pretty crazy.

Simone Niggli?
At finish of Leg 4, 3 women's teams had opened a 2-minute gap. But Simone started Leg 5 only 2:27 behind. While I expected her to chase down the lead pack, she consistently lost time and was soon passed by Tanja. In 9 K, Simone lost 8 minutes to Tanja and 4 minutes to the pack. Story? What happened? Injury? Bad run?
(We only 'watched' the results, not the streaming etc)

Ricka: Simone discribes on her webpage that she had a bad run, making a big mistake earlier on and small ones after that, loosing some self confidence and therefore always slowing down a bit, until the last 2/3rds of the course where she could then gain a few places by the end. I guess everyone can have a bad day.

Ricka:
Thanks Sandra. Simone has been SO consistent, the result was a shock. With that speed and pressure, the men's leaders showed a lot of bobbles as well - hard for we mere O' mortatls to appreciate the intensity of the Tiomila.

Hope the ankle is recovering even faster than expected. We get to see Zan this weekend:):).

I just discovered yesterday that my cousin finished 2nd on the women's first leg. It looks like giving birth 9 month earlier has not affected her fitness too negatively...

Perhaps more evidence that having a baby can actually help improve cardiovascular capacity... Not that I'm planning on trying that one anytime soon.

Did anyone hear the story about Halden's first leg runner? I understand he stopped to help someone that had seriously injured himself. Apparently another runner also stopped to help, and they took the injured guy to a trail and gave him one of their trac-trac devices so the officials could find him easily. So Halden lost about 7 minutes to that - so I was told. Or have I mixed up anecdotes?
May 20, 2007 6:20 PM #
bubo:
No, that is correct...

First leg runners for Halden and Delta - both heavily favored teams - stopped to give an injured runner help about one third (?) into the race. We could see some strange GPS-markings on the big screen for a while when all this happened.

The unfortunate runner got a stick into his thigh with lots of blood as a result. The Delta runner used his shirt to stop the blood flow - both Delta and Halden were delayed for about 7-8 minutes and quite understandably also mentally shaken...
May 21, 2007 3:28 PM #
Ebbot:
I don't know if it matters too much, but I believe the Halden runner lost most of his time on controls after having helped the injured runner. If I remember correctly, according to the interview he gave afterwards he thought his booms might have been caused by him being shaked since he knew the injured runner.
