Canadians living in our four Atlantic provinces are noted for their easy going way of life and their propensity for understatement.
I guess that is why we are not hearing much about a fantastic nine days of orienteering coming up in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in mid-August. First is the Fishbones –three events on Aug 17-18. Don’t let the name fool you. The event areas are nowhere near the rocky coast. They take place in Wentworth Valley,Nova Scotia, known for its ski area and dominated by deciduous forests. Then comes the eastern version of the Sass Peepre training camp. That’s when you can dump the kids and take an adult tour of PEI, Cape Breton, Peggy’s Cove or any of dozens of other tourist attractions. Use your compass to see if Moncton’s Magnetic Hill really is magnetic. Play golf? PEI is the Hilton Head of Canada.
Did you miss the chance a few years ago to orienteer on the ocean floor? Do you want to do it again? Get your Innov-8’s to Hopewell on August 23rd. (It’s an early start and I think that has something to do with the tides. Don’t be late!)
Then come the Eastern Canadian Orienteering Championships the 24th and 25th in an urban park in Saint John, NB. This is tough, interesting and technical terrain, not your Boston Common type of urban park.
