Great effort! Hurray for the "old" guys! Three minute improvement is impressive. I think all that technology was holding you back.
Getting better with age? I've done the race once, and can appreciate that 75 minutes is an exceptional time for an old guy.
Ditto on the performance. Maybe leaving technology behind helped. I now recall your running it last year. Did it once maybe 10 years ago. You're probably due for a 50 miler.
10 to 50 miles is too big a jump for me, some may do it, but I like to be ready to race within my limits.
I recall reading about your first (and perhaps only?) 100 miler - feels like maybe 7 years ago. Didn't you want to pack it in at 39 mi? PG "gave strength" the final 30? And, somehow, you found the means from 40 to 70 ( plus that final 30!). Incomprehensible #'s (and mindset) to me. Recall when PG & Fred P had their ultrarunner magazine & were doing these with some regularity.
100 miler was 9! Years ago.
I was talking to a runner yesterday preparing for his first one, in Weston,MA of all places (TARC race), and the miles and time he is putting in.
I have thought about another, but realize I am not willing todo the prep.
Maybe when I retire. ;-)
You'll have less time once you retire ;-)
I looked at the Weston 100 miler map - a 25 mi loop four times. Lots of twists & turns
in a relatively small area, starting at 7p. Will be interesting to read about it after. Wonder if there is a psychologically optimal type of course for such a long race - point to point, or loops of varying sizes, compressed woods, open terrain etc etc. Compressed as in Weston is easier on the organizers for sure.
Noted the Earl's Trails map from last May is less then 2 sq k - similar theme of a long distance for area size. Add: oh, read of pre-meet info points out map is inc'd in sz.
