The 2013 World Ski Orienteering Championships are taking place this week in Ridder, in Eastern Kazakhstan. For interested spectators, the WSOC ("wuh-sock") program this week is:
Monday:Hang out, chillax
Tuesday:Sprint, 10:30a - 12:45p
Wednesday:Middle, 10a - 1:15p
Thursday:Mixed sprint relay, 11a - 12:30p
Friday: Rest Day, Sightsee, chillax
Saturday:Relay, 10a - 1:30p
Sunday:Long, 10a - 1:45p

The meet site is on time zone UTC+6, which is eleven hours ahead of EST. Check out the WSOC website for results and updates, though I don't know how regularly it will be updated. Go USA!

Apparently the IOF page is also a good place to look for live results:

Certainly many other links have been posted elsewhere - particularly in team member blogs, but to reiterate publicly:
- US results and commentary from 2011:
http://www.us.orienteering.org/us-teams/ski/result...
- Alex Jospe's blog, with daily updates on the team's activity:
http://alexjospe.blogspot.com

Unfortunately, the Ski WOC 2011 domain seems to have been discontinued, but the results can still be found at the IOF website:
http://orienteering.org/events/?event_id=132

There are also some fun statistics pages on the IOF Ski-O world ranking site.
- Top 25 highest scoring WRE point runs of 2013. It's exciting to note that Ali has the 20th and 24th highest scoring runs so far this year: http://iof.6prog.org/WR_High.aspx?HOW=S
- Head to Head matchups, useful for tracking the top results: http://iof.6prog.org/WR_H2H.aspx?HOW=S

So much suspense. Any speculation on what the cause is? Maybe the ice dam over the suspension bridge gave out.

I think they got a lot of snow last night, and are probably out regrooming all the small trails.

Yes, Scott just started as 7th male.

I suspect the live results from http://sportident.ru/ol/ aren't actually updating live; there aren't any finishers yet 37 minutes after the first start. The women's GPS tracking from http://sportrec.navirec.com/ui/#18ja0e0 could be working; I guess we'll know when the first GPS tracker - Polina Malchikova - starts at 1:20 EST.

I can see people move around in the stadium on the tracking, but still no background map.

It looks like the men's GPS paces through the little wee trails are a bit under 5:00/km. Among you ski-O folks, is that fast? About how wide do you think these little dashed guys are?

Mar 5, 2013 6:33 AM #
iansmith:
It looks like there is a steady snow falling in the video. I wonder what the ski conditions are like; the US team was definitely concerned yesterday about uncertain weather. How would new falling snow (especially at or just above freezing) affect optimal wax conditions?
Mar 5, 2013 6:35 AM #
iansmith:
Yikes, Kravchenko is really putting the hammer down on Rognstad. The network of trails among the women's controls 3-8 looks intense, with lots of variety on microroute from the GPS tracks.

The fresh snow can have a huge influence on ski/grind selection in addition to wax. It looks like the Finns are the only ones who have really hit the ski/wax selection perfectly.

I'm having very intermittent coverage from the video stream (http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ski-woc-1); the video cuts out entirely after about 20-30s. Is anyone else having that problem? Lacking GPS, the video stream would be a great way to keep track of the US competitors in subsequent races if it is reliable.
Mar 5, 2013 6:46 AM #

Video is working fine for me, but it shows only 11 people watching, so there may be issues keeping some people off.

So, a cursory look at the data reveals that the US had solid performance compared to the 2011 results as measured by %back of the winning time. Also, the field in Kazakhstan is much stronger and skewed towards the faster people; a lot of the slower people apparently stayed home. Winning time isn't the most stable measure, but it's fairly reliable. I'm very curious to see what the team people thought of the conditions and race.

Ian, do you ski? I imagine with your skills at Corn Maze O' (how many times US Champion?), you could do pretty well with those Kazakh mazes.

I think if anyone on the standing team has good personal incentive to train at Ski-O, it's Ian...
Mar 5, 2013 3:24 PM #

Yeah, he skis, and I bet would totally rock these mazes, I should request to borrow those skills next ski-WOC =).

In any case, just a fyi that I was lucky enough to score a GPS spot tomorrow, so anyone up at 9.44pm EST can try to watch, if all goes well!

Our start times (-11h for EST) are:
Anna - 10.08
Alex - 10.12
Ali - 10.44

Greg - 10.07
Adrian - 10.11
Scott - 10.23

Wyatt, I ski - but like a duck, and not a ski prodigy duck, but a duck with bad technique. I have some enthusiasm for learning, but I have chosen to prioritize one sport at a time. I would probably have to undertake a multiyear bigginsesque program of getting fast. I believe I have three CMOUSA titles, but the results aren't up anywhere (JJ?), and only one of those titles was won facing Biggins.

Do you ski, Wyatt?

Perfect Eddie!

BTW: Do they use GPS or GLONASS (Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema) tracking?
Mar 6, 2013 3:11 AM #
iansmith:
One hour until the first start of the Middle Distance course! The first start for the US is Greg at 11:07 PM EST, and the last is Ali at 11:44. Get psyched!

Measured by average %back of the winning time, the middle distance has been the toughest race for the US. I speculate that this reflects the more technical meanderings through trail mazes; for the most part, the American athletes don't have the opportunity to train on complex cross country ski-O terrain that you see in Europe and apparently Kazakhstan. Among the 5 Americans returning from the 2011 Ski-WOC, the average pct-back for the middle was 47% compared to 34% and 30% for the sprint and long respectively.

Reigning world champions Polina Malchikova and Staffan Tunis are back for more. Malchikova starts two minutes behind the top ranked Tove Alexandersson, so that promises to be an exciting GPS spectacle. Ali will also have GPS.

Hm, not sure if Ali didn't get a GPS or if they're only showing ten, but the first woman starter with a GPS listed is Yuliya Tarasenko , the third starter after Ali. Sixteen men are listed with GPS starting with Haverstad at 12:08 EST. My guess is they won't show the map until the first GPS starter at 11:50 EST.

And we have map on the GPS! The lower right of the middle distance course is the sprint map from yesterday. I guess that was obvious if you've read the bulletins.

Yuliya Tarasenko is the first woman starter with GPS unfortunately.

Its as if there is no interupt in the updating of the runners on the screen. It has to complete a full cycle through everything before it checks to see if I did anything else in the mean time. Anyone else having this issue?
Mar 6, 2013 5:17 AM #
iansmith:
Oops, I'm an idiot; Hellberg and Spoerry on the men's side took the western river crossing rather than the eastern. It looks like the eastern is faster, though. Kravchenko is catching Rognstad en route to 3, yikes. Kozlova's also really gaining on Engstrom - I think 4 is an important route choice.
Mar 6, 2013 5:18 AM #

Nuts, I'm not having any issues Eddie. I'm running in Chrome, though I doubt that matters. Maybe run AP and the GPS tracking in different browsers?

Engstroms GPS died!
Mar 6, 2013 5:37 AM #
iansmith:
Looks like the Kozlova/Novikova/Engstrom(?) pack is going strong en route to 8. Reigning champion Malchikova seems to be having a good race, flying solo and gaining about a minute on Tarasenko. The men's side looks like a race of many colored worms.

What is (reigning men's champion) Tunis doing? He seems to be returning to the start after only going a few hundred meters.
Mar 6, 2013 5:37 AM #
iansmith:
Kozlova seems like a tough competitor; Engstrom's GPS might not be the only thing that died.
Mar 6, 2013 5:40 AM #
iansmith:
Biggins is in! His time is 1:31:39, currently in fifth. Also Tunis is heading back out again - maybe he had a broken pole or a ghettomap or something. He's lost about four minutes though, so it looks unlikely he will repeat.

Mar 6, 2013 5:50 AM #
iansmith:
And it looks like Tove's absence was due to GPS issues and not race issues - she just finished in 2nd, 47s behind Mariya Kechkina. TV interview guy just talked about Biggins.

But not for long...
Mar 6, 2013 5:56 AM #
iansmith:
In F21, the Russians Kozlova and Kravchenko are dominating. Kozlova has passed Novikova (4 minutes ahead) solidly, and Kravchenko is about four minutes behind Kozlova (started six minutes ahead).

Maybe Kozlova benefited from catching Engstrom and Novikova - she's in the lead in 54:57 a full minute ahead of 3rd place Kechkina. I'm pretty sure Kravchenko is going to stomp on Kozlova's time, though.

I take back the Finnish dominance - the Russians are killing it.

Looks like Ali will be top 15 at worst?
Mar 6, 2013 5:58 AM #
iansmith:
Yeah, it looks like Ali is top 15! She finished 18th last year, and the top of the field is really tightly packed this year. Ali had a phenomenal race - last year, she was 22% back. It looks like Kravchenko will win in a dominating 53:37, two minutes ahead of 3rd place, and Ali is 9% back of Kravchenko's time.

I'd guess Ali will finish in 12th, since Rognstad dnf'd and Hellberg probably won't beat Ali.

The uni-watcher in me is wondering why they have to wear the bibs when there aren't any numbers or identification on them (maybe on the back?). If there's no practical reason to wear them, then it's annoying to have the event bib cover up the national jerseys. Also, I've never seen a map holder hole specifically designed into a piece of athletic apparel before.

Those style bibs are common for ski-o events. There is probably a number on the back.
Mar 7, 2013 4:06 AM #
eddie:
Yes, there's a number on the back. Ed, check out the jumbotron hanging from your trusses in the background. Hanging from ratchet straps no less :)
Mar 7, 2013 4:25 AM #
edwarddes:
I already asked Alex to get some better pictures of it. It looks like an element labs (now barco) style display. Its made up of fanfold panes that pack flat into a road case. To set it up, you assemble the truss towers, and the cross beam. The crossbeam is on winches and can move up and down. With it lowered above the roadcases, you attach the straps, and then just lift the beam. As it raises, it unfold the panels out of their case into a large display.

I've got 30,000 extra oval leds anytime you want to start soldering them into panels...

I'm running a bit behind on tonight's action, starting in ten minutes!

Mixed Relay, mass start, starting 11 AM Kazakh time, midnight EST!
Team list: http://sportident.ru/ol/

Racing for the US are Ali Crocker and Scott Pleban. It looks like they each go out thrice, for a total of six legs. There are twelve total teams. Favorites probably have to be Sweden with Tove Alexandersson and Peter Arnesson and Russia with Anastasia Kravchenko and Andrei Lamov.

Arnesson and Lamov have gone 1-2 in both the middle and the sprint. Tove and Kravchenko traded victories on the sprint and middle, so I think Sweden has to be the favorite.

Mar 7, 2013 5:06 AM #

Yeah, Ed - the channel is off air. They aren't streaming the sprint relay. They displayed interval start data.
Mar 7, 2013 5:07 AM #
eddie:
Looks like no tracking. I'll have to be happy with just the leg split updates (sigh).
Mar 7, 2013 5:07 AM #
edwarddes:
Then what is the video that I'm watching? I must be from another day?
Mar 7, 2013 5:08 AM #

Alex said yesterday that both the spectator and go control were radios, they just aren't getting that data online.
Mar 7, 2013 5:09 AM #
iansmith:
The US finished 12/23 in the sprint relay in 2011 with Ali and Biggins skiing. The bib numbers from the live results correspond to the finish order (ignoring nations that are absent, like 2011 8th place Lithuanian). As you can see, the field is enriched for fast countries - 8 of the 11 countries that beat the US in 2011 are back, whereas only 3/11 behind the US are back.
Mar 7, 2013 5:09 AM #
cedarcreek:
Is biggins competing?
Mar 7, 2013 5:10 AM #
iansmith:
@edwarddes - Yeah, the lower right indicator in the video interface says "off air." I'm not sure what's playing.
Mar 7, 2013 5:10 AM #
edwarddes:
Only one team per country. USA team is Ali/Scott.
Mar 7, 2013 5:10 AM #
iansmith:
Cedarcreek - no, the US team is Ali Crocker and Scott Pleban.
Mar 7, 2013 5:10 AM #
Pink Socks:
Is Russia the favorite here?
Mar 7, 2013 5:11 AM #
barb:
Ah, some action!
Mar 7, 2013 5:11 AM #
iansmith:
Kravchenko (Russia) in second on the first leg in 9:22, Ulvensen (Norway) leading in 9:21. The defending champs turning in a strong showing today. The winning time in 2011 was 1:05, so I guess the expected winning time on each of the legs is about ten minutes.
Mar 7, 2013 5:12 AM #
iansmith:
Russia's the defending champ, but Sweden's Peter Arnesson won both the sprint and middle. Russia's man Lamov came in second on both races, and Tove and Kravchenko traded victories on the sprint and middle. I would say Sweden is a very slight favorite over Russia.
Mar 7, 2013 5:14 AM #
iansmith:
The team reports that conditions are less brutal than yesterday, but it's drizzly and warm. It also didn't freeze overnight, so the snow is probably fairly soft. Does anyone know what that means for wax and ski conditions? My guess is that the snow will be slower, and it will be easy to sink.
Mar 7, 2013 5:14 AM #
edwarddes:
Something must be wrong with the live results. A 5min gap?
Mar 7, 2013 5:15 AM #
iansmith:
Looks like there is some latency in the results - only Norway, Russia, and Kazakhstan have finish times, but it's inconceivable that the rest of the field would be five+ minutes back.
Mar 7, 2013 5:16 AM #
barb:
Do they all race the same legs in the same order?
Mar 7, 2013 5:16 AM #
edwarddes:
Skis will be fast again. The flouros can make a ton of difference with all the moisture.
Track conditions are really a problem though. Greg was having a lot of trouble getting up hills yesterday in the soft conditions, today will probably be worse for the heavy guys.
Mar 7, 2013 5:17 AM #
edwarddes:
Legs will be heavily forked, so we won't know the real order until all the legs are skied.
Mar 7, 2013 5:17 AM #
iansmith:
And almost all the Leg 1 results are in! Ali had a great leg in 10:53, currently in 9th, 1:32 behind leader Norway. It's not clear if she had a longer leg, but she's in a great position. Finland is sitting in fifth only 13 seconds ahead of Ali.
Mar 7, 2013 5:17 AM #
edwarddes:
US through in 9th, just in the second pack.
Mar 7, 2013 5:19 AM #
barb:
yay!
Mar 7, 2013 5:19 AM #
iansmith:
Man, I wish we knew the leg lengths. It's going to be hard to predict who is doing well without more information. Tove is 79 seconds back of Kravchenko, so I might have to eat my words about Sweden.

Looks like Norway is the first result reported for leg 2, in 18:31.
Mar 7, 2013 5:19 AM #
edwarddes:
Norway still in the lead at the second handoff.
Mar 7, 2013 5:20 AM #
kensr:
Ok, US in 9th, but a tight pack. Video about to start with 10 min delay.
Mar 7, 2013 5:21 AM #
iansmith:
Looks like the first pack is all in on the second leg - Norway still leading, with Kazakhstan, Russia, and Switzerland about a minute back. Russia and Switzerland have been exactly tied on both legs.
Mar 7, 2013 5:21 AM #
edwarddes:
Norway really pulled away on the second leg! almost a minute lead!
Mar 7, 2013 5:23 AM #
iansmith:
Sweden and Bulgaria gaining on the first pack, 1:20 and 1:37 back on leader Norway after the second leg. Second through eight are separated by less than a minute.
Mar 7, 2013 5:23 AM #
kensr:
Ah, the video looks like yesterday.
Mar 7, 2013 5:25 AM #
edwarddes:
Sweden made up time on the first pack, but not to Norway.
Mar 7, 2013 5:25 AM #

Mar 7, 2013 5:29 AM #
iansmith:
Second leg: And results delay! Scott is in 10th, in 23:17! Without knowing leg lengths, the US is about three minutes back of the densest pack.
Mar 7, 2013 5:29 AM #

Mar 7, 2013 5:30 AM #

Norway through the tag again with a sub 10min leg.
Mar 7, 2013 5:31 AM #
iansmith:
Third leg: Kazakhstan takes the lead over Norway, with a time of 29:04 to 29:55! Finland and Sweden are right with Norway in a Scandinavian trio.
Mar 7, 2013 5:32 AM #
edwarddes:
Woah, I didn't notice that was Kazakhstan in the lead, they had an awesome leg.
Mar 7, 2013 5:32 AM #
iansmith:
Third leg: Bulgaria, Estonia, and Switzerland all finish in a pack separated by six seconds, about two minutes back of leading Kazakhstan. No results reported for Russia yet.
Mar 7, 2013 5:32 AM #
Pink Socks:
Did Bulgaria and Estonia field teams in 2011? They seem to be overachieving based on their bib numbers.

cedarcreek:
Is the video a stationary camera with no action? Because that's what I've got.
Mar 7, 2013 5:33 AM #
iansmith:
Third leg: Kravchenko finishes in 31:17 (leg time 11:47), well back of Kazakhstan Novikova's leg time of 9:38. Dunno leg lengths.
Mar 7, 2013 5:35 AM #
iansmith:
Third leg: Ali finishes in 33:25, currently in tenth place! USA is five seconds back of Czech Republic, two minutes out of eighth. Ali had a fast leg of 10:08, but again no idea how long each leg is. Could be 2k, could be 20k.

Concerning the 2011 results: Even though the US finished dead center of the pack (12/23), among the 2013 teams present, Estonia (bib 12) didn't participate in 2011, and Bulgaria (bib 11) DNF'd, so the only team present that the US beat was Japan.
Mar 7, 2013 5:38 AM #
edwarddes:
@cedercreek, video is not live from today. There doesn't seem to be any tracking or video today.

what I'd *really* like to know is why leg4 and leg5 have narrower columns in the results. Its highly suspicious......

Mar 7, 2013 5:41 AM #

It's going to be interesting to find out what the forking was like. I suspect there was a large variance in leg lengths.
Mar 7, 2013 5:42 AM #
kensr:
Wow! Leg 4 is scrambling things up.
Mar 7, 2013 5:42 AM #
iansmith:
Fourth leg: holy cow, eight teams separated by 1:37. Finland with a narrow 47 second lead, with Sweden, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, and Norway in a 25s range.
Mar 7, 2013 5:48 AM #
iansmith:
Fourth leg: And Scott is in! Time of 46:33, currently in tenth. It looks like Czech Republic sitting in ninth has broken away from the US with a three minute lead, but without leg length knowledge, it's hard to say. Consider the time shuffles from leg 2 to 4: (Norway 21:46 to Finland's 18:48).
Mar 7, 2013 5:50 AM #
iansmith:
Ali's out on her last leg, undoubtedly has her game face on.

Mar 7, 2013 5:50 AM #
iansmith:

Mar 7, 2013 5:50 AM #
iansmith:
Fifth leg: Sweden takes the lead! Tove Alexandersson puts the afterburners on, glides past Finland's Pesu, and erases a 47 second deficit with a time of 49:08 to 49:34.
Mar 7, 2013 5:51 AM #
eddie:
Einstein said "time shuffles" were his greatest blunder.
Mar 7, 2013 5:52 AM #
iansmith:
Fifth leg: Bulgaria and Norway are 3rd and 4th, but both over 1:20 behind Sweden. It looks like defending champs Russia are pretty far out of contention.

Update: Russia and Switzerland still together (maybe same forking?) five seconds apart, two minutes behind leading Sweden.
Mar 7, 2013 5:54 AM #
iansmith:
Arnesson has been owning Finland's Tunis at races this week like Norway owns vast natural gas reserves, so if their legs are comparable length and snow conditions are like yesterday, you have to like Sweden for the win.

eddie:
Oh yeeah? Make me!

So unfortunately have to report that I mispunched on my second leg. Feels terrible because it's not messing up just my own race, but also Scott's. There is really no good excuse for it, I think my brain saw the '33' and then looked at the map, possibly upside down and thought that that fit the bill for the required '53'. But really, both the going in and leaving were sketchy, so blah, I just should have done better.

I don't remember her place now but she was not far behind the leaders, maybe a minute or less? orienteering.org results only show total team times. Are there more detailed results somewhere else?

Hey guys - thanks for following! Sorry the gps stuff didn't quite work out. They weren't showing the map because they didn't want to have to share the terrain, and with the middle distance, they showed the map, so some teams had people at home screen capture the map, to study later, but the organizers were hoping to keep the map secret. Anyway, this time I guess they don't show any maps to anyone.

It was great weather out there, which made spectating a lot of fun. I had a good start, ahead of Switzerland and Czech Republic (and a very lost norwegian) and Kaz, but unfortunately I broke a ski between 5-6, so lost ~2-3min between there and the stadium. A frustrating thing for a relay, but anything can happen in orienteering.

The men skied well, very close to each other, and Adrian snuck past Germany in the last leg! Japan skied a very good race (though there is some question of a mispunch, to be resolved), and it was fun to have a race for our relay.

At the front, Russia took the lead after Norway broke skis on leg 1 and leg 2, and Finland and Sweden came down to a sprint, won by a boot throw by Arnesson.

Long distance tomorrow - hopefully Ali gets a tracker! Thanks again for following along!
Mar 9, 2013 1:47 PM #
AliC:
According to start list, both Greg and I should have GPSs tomorrow. Hope we do in fact get them and they work smoothly! 10am for the women's start and 11.30am for the men. We don't yet have distances/numbers of laps/stadium lay out because they are finalizing courses as we speak, hopefully successfully having rebuilt some bridges to allow us into new terrain!

I dunno about you guys racing, but as a spectator I'm exhausted :) Late night last night, up early to go race this morning. Another late one tonight followed by an even earlier start tomorrow to hang controls, including the hour lost to DST. A nap is in the cards for Sunday afternoon.

Seriously, its been great fun watching. Although I haven't been able to get the video working, the tracking and live results have been remarkably good. The issues about not being able to show the map have certainly impacted the remote spectating experience. Will have to keep that in mind for any event that intends to use live tracking. Its far less interesting without the map under the dots.

Best of luck tonight guys! We'll be watching.

Maybe not quite as exhausting to follow from Sweden, but 4:00 or 5:00 mornings are not my favourite time of day...
Video worked for a while here for me but died in the end, tracking was OK the whole time, results/splits too - so viewing experience was pleasant enough. Would have been much better with a map of course, but that´s the way it is right now I guess.

Good luck to all tomorrow - or rather today since this will be very early morning for you in KAZ!

Interesting video from the relay - interviews in Swedish but also lots of filmage from the courses.
Mar 9, 2013 10:43 PM #
PG:
Even with no map, you could have fun changing the tail length. Such as, for the last leg, set the tails at 5 minutes, the Kaz woman had about a 5:30 lead on Ali, and you could easily see where it was narrowing and where not. Or set the tails at "from start" and you could see the whole trail network they were using and then see if someone was taking a less used route.

But it still ain't nowhere close to seeing the map.
Mar 9, 2013 10:51 PM #
PG:
That's a nice video, bubo. Who was doing the filming?
Mar 9, 2013 10:56 PM #
bubo:
Swedish Federation I guess, I think they had a guy with a GoPro cam out on the tracks - like they did in Tänndalen two years ago - not live this time though. From Alex´s account he offered her his ski so he was to some use too...
All other interviews and reports and possible on-site filming are done by two media representatives from Skogssport/SOFT.
Mar 9, 2013 10:57 PM #

All right, everyone; we're six minutes into the women's long! The race is mass start. Get psyched!

GPS tracking - with map!
Results - as the night progresses.

It looks like Ali (the only American F21 GPS, unfortunately) is just behind leader Josefine Engstrom and right ahead of Kozlova approaching the first common control!

Weather looks a bit brutal in the live stream, with a steady stream of snow falling.
Mar 10, 2013 4:12 AM #
iansmith:
The map is the same as was used on the sprint, middle, and sprint relay, with a new section of the map on the eastern half of the long course. Oddly enough, it's at 1:12.5k scale; is that unusual for ski-O?

Looks like Kozlova took a very good route to the northeastern control 6; she gained almost a minute on Ali and Engstrom's higher route. Kozlova's comfortably in the lead, ahead of Engstrom, Pesu, and Ali among the GPS tracks.
Mar 10, 2013 4:23 AM #

The trail network around 5-9 on both forks looks insanely complicated. Engstrom goes off trail on (7,8) -> 8, gaining some time on Kozlova. These Swedish women do not fear the off-trail.

Mar 10, 2013 5:07 AM #

Engstrom is definitely a short-forker. Tales of her having a long first fork have been greatly exaggerated.

Kozlova, Engstrom, and Alexandersson battling it out!! It's a sprint finish for Silver?

Now that's an exciting race!

We have a map for the men. . . and they're off! Perfect timing.

Does anyone know what this "prefinish" and "result" business is? Do they have to do the hokey-pokey after they finish the third leg?
Mar 10, 2013 5:32 AM #
iansmith:
Ooo, apparently Kozlova got Tove by 0.5 seconds for 2nd, Engstrom 0.6s back in fourth. Sorry, bubo; from Russia with love.

Invisible Alex is out there somewhere. Must be close by.

Biggins in the house. I don't suppose he tried to get them to use "biggins" for his tracking icon?
Mar 10, 2013 5:40 AM #
iansmith:
What is Lamov doing? Broken ski/pole, or wrong fork? Also, does it sound like the live streaming is in fact an hour behind?

I wonder if having biggins on skis sneak up on you is anything like the gorilla in Catching Features.

Ali is finished in 1:34:21, 6:03 behind Pesu. This year's results had less time variance than 2011; the finishers were all much closer. Alex finished in 1:40:19. Very speedy races from the ladies.

It looks like something broke; Lamov back out on the course after visiting the finish. He's over ten minutes back of the leaders, so this doesn't look like it will turn out well for him.

Lamov skiing fast. How much time will he make up?

Looks like Lamov stopped after one loop.

Arnesson in the lead? How many non-GPS are there around out there?

Will Arnesson take another Gold?! Where is Hakkinen?

Well bubo, I have to wake up in 3 hrs so I better go to bed now :) Wish I could stay up for the rest. Best of luck to our guys. Will check the results in the morning.

Hmm, Bergmann seems to be confused similarly to the Japanese guy.

Goodnight Eddie! It´s only been an early morning here. Next "project" is Word Cup XC skiing from Lahti on TV ;)
Nice day out but I´m grounded by a stomach bug so will not do anything physical today.

Hi Carol, let´s cheer Greg into beating Bergmann. He looked stronger on the flat parts but slower uphill. Soon turning downhill again.
Go Biggins!

Guess we didn't quite manage :( Still, good result. I think 35th is a new record for him :)

Looking at the tracks and splits now, Tove and Josefine blew it at the end. Tove back 1:20 from FIN on 26-27. Engstrom back :21 on 27-28. Too bad bubo; talk to Tove ;-. But good for FIN to get a gold.

Ethan and I were watching last night as Tove made her mistake. Wondered if maybe she was intentionally heading to 28 (didn't see 27), or if she simply missed the trail.

Oleg (or anyone): Which Satellite Navigation System is used by civilians within the Russian sphere: The Russian GLONASS or US GPS?

To NEOC#1. GLONASS receivers appeared on the market only 2 years ago, so they aren't very popular right now and they are mainly used in public transportation and for municipal needs. But many devices (like iPhone 4S) using both GPS and GLONASS to increase accuracy.

Thanks Oleg! Both - intriguing. And I see that dual systems chips are available. Used only by the government earlier, I assume. Wiki-GLONASS

And thanks bubo for the link. Some fine footage. Tove said that she was really wiped at the end where she bombed.

More video!
Apparently IOF and the organizers in Kazakstan had a media team that produced short videos from each distance that can be seen here.
