I did email the organiser about the map.

Got a reply including this line; "My view is that to have an area professionally mapped would not be realistic for anything but the largest events; otherwise the entry fees would have to be so high that it would deter many people from taking part."

Surely the cost of a map is spread of many events, not one. A poor map probably deters people more, especially beginners.

So you're another person to add to the list of people who thought the map was 'odd'! Number 4 was a cracker though!.....with a whole hill missing!! That said, mapping can be quite hard - as I know from my own experiences. I just don't get how the planner and controller failed to spot the major omissions so that the map could be corrected before the event. I guess we must all remember that they are volunteers.

I always thiink it's important that people volunteer.
I'm thinking of volunteering in africa. I had a look at what you can do down there and they're desperate for doctors. I have no medical training whatsever, but how hard can it be. Beats building water pumps. I'm sure me doing some volunteer surgury will make a postive contribution to society.

PS - gutted i didn't go straight 8 -> 9

Ah - classic antiquated thought process of British orienteers... Sounds like the main problem was they didn't bother spending money on a decent relief base map - which is going to be pretty accurate for an open area. A one-off investment that makes the survey so much easier.

Who was the mapper? And it sounds like the planner/controller weren't up to much either...

maybe they just had a sense of humour?

I'm not entering into discussion over the quality of the map as I wasn't there to experience it, especially as I am presently living and working in WSX territory and can see the mapped area from my office. I am disappointed to read so many accounts of it being not up to scratch. I had great expectations about this new map. To answer Ian's question, the mapper is a WSX gentleman who runs M75; the Planner an M80.

I for one will do my utmost to veto Keith's entry into Africa. Poor buggers haven't got much as it is.
