OUSA Junior Coach Erin Schirm’s monthly report for January has been published.

Erin, along with JTESC, published the application to the Junior Standing Team (JST). Erin reached out to many juniors, and 41 juniors applied, indicating their willingness to train at least 5 hours a week, work with a coach, and represent the USA at competitions. JTESC will make the selection of the JST in February.

At the Georgia Navigator Cup, Erin conducted a junior course review, a coaching clinic, designed and implemented three fun events as a junior team fundraiser, and spoke at the Board meeting. Erin also spoke with quite a few juniors, coaches and parents. We are grateful to GAOC, and Bill Cheatum in particular, for their support of the junior team fundraiser.

In the area of clubs’ junior development, Erin met with Gary Kraght and myself in California, and met with DVOA members and leaders at their winter meeting on the east coast. He also advised WCOC members on the design of the March 2-3 junior training camp. (In support of Erin’s junior development goals, I met with the NEOC board to discuss a possible collaboration with Adventure Racing Kids.)

Erin meets at least weekly with me (Junior Team Administrator) and Guy Olsen (JTESC chair) by phone. He was part of a JTESC meeting to start JST selection.

In February, Erin will lead JST selection and start working with the team. In addition, we’ll get the Junior Development Team rolling; an initial application has been posted. Erin will also work with the organizers of 5 upcoming A meets to plan junior activities. He’ll be submitting proposed rules changes to the Board via the Rules Committee, related to JWOC selection and competition categories. He’ll also meet with me and Glen Schorr (OUSA Executive Director) about grants and sponsorships. He’ll be attending a WIOL meet and the Vancouver sprint camp, in the Pacific Northwest, as well as the B meet and advanced training camp in Arizona.

All in all, Erin has made great progress toward the ambitious one-year goals he set out when OUSA hired him into the junior development contractor position.

All of Erin’s monthly reports are available on the web:

I've polled some of the elite juniors about what trainings and competitions they're likely to attend. So far I've gotten 18 responses, and am hoping to hear from another 20 kids soon. 16 kids are likely to be at JWOC, so far; hopefully that will be more like 25-30 after I hear from others. (There are spectator races for those not competing in JWOC, and a couple of weeks of training ahead of JWOC, and a few days after.) (A lot of these kids need financial support.)

Of the 18 26 (updated 2/10/2013), we've got these numbers for other training/junior gathering opportunities I polled:
3 - AZ, Feb
3 7 - CT, Mar
9 12 - KS, Mar
2 3 - CA, Mar (forgot to add this to the poll at first)
6 9 - IN Pig
8 13 - West Point, April
6 12 - NY champs / team trials, May
4 9 - train with Canadian team or Erin in NY in April or May or June
4 - train with Canadian team in British Columbia, June

Each kid will attend an average of nearly 3 of these national/junior-oriented training or competition events, with a max of 8.
