Please check it out, talk it up, and help us make it happen!
Great opportunity in the northeast region! That same weekend there will be another junior opportunity in the Midwest with two TROL league meets in two days in Kentucky. Perhaps we can incorporate some additional training and social activity with those races as well.
This would be awesome if it was the weekend i have break on March 16-17. Pretty please?
That sound great for AJ and Oriana! Who can host 4 plus a dog?;)
Indeed, I'm not sure how well Multy would fare against the devil cats.
How far is this training from Berney and Lisa - Suffern, NY?
Motel 6 takes dogs?
we may bring another boy wtih us if we go - Victor Frolenko from DVOA!
Motel 6 is pet friendly
Bring Remi 2
Remi is into swimming now... Plus I can't have 4 kids and a dog in a motel room;)
Okay - please hold off booking things like hotel rooms. As of the 30+ inches of snow the region just received, the woods may still be impassable by the 2/3rd of March.
We will let you know about whether it will go ahead a week in advance. Everyone (including Multy) will be welcome to stay at our place if hotels etc cost too much that soon before the date.
We are due some rain tomorrow and I expect that will crust over making the snow very resistant to melt. It may be some time before we can get into the woods in New Haven county.
I remember when a few Swedes came to the US for training prior to WOC 93. There was over a foot of snow and they trained everyday like usual. I ran with them one day in the snow and it was not easy, but easier than I thought it would be. Great workout.
It all depends on the kind of snow. It will go ahead if there is less than a foot of soft stuff. If there is two feet with a thick icy crust that you slide on top of and break through every other step like two years ago, it will be cancelled. We'll let you know the week before.
We run in the forest through the winter - a weekly night-O is part of the regular training for many elite clubs. A foot of snow is quite OK to run in and definitely good training. Cold weather and snow may not be the best to inspire kids - but on the other hand running in soft snow on a sunny day can also be a lot of fun.
Running through a foot of snow is good training for elites that already enjoy O and need the physical training. For beginning Juniors, 18-24 inches of snow with a breaking frozen crust would be enough to convince them of the madness of the sport. The amount of snow is tough and is good training. The crust destroys shins in a very painful manner.
That is exactly my thoughts! I will be up there to check the conditions the week before, and decide then.
March is a tricky time for us, some years snow free, others we get a big dump any time, even early April.
We're melting pretty well over here in the sun! I'm guessing this will mostly come down to how many frosts we get in the next couple of weeks. I'll keep you posted!
Snowpack volume dropping much faster than expected up here as well. Helps that it didn't go below freezing last night so snow melt/compaction never lost momentum. And seasonably warm days forecast for most of the foreseeable future.
Fingers crossed... A good group of juniors is planning to go.
how is snow condition? Any news on this training?
I misunderstood the question. Nevermind me. :-)
Barb has been posting some updates in her log.
I am going to Osbornedale on Saturday (I do have a normal job) and will let everyone know then. It's not looking great, the recent rain crusted the surface, but there was less snow over there than here in New Haven.
You might get a better idea of the conditions by going Sunday, as things might change overnight.
About a foot of dense snowpack up here (Gay City area) remains and current outlook is for 4-8 of new snow likely tomorrow night. But the exact storm track could readily shift to mostly rain which could greatly diminish whats here. And hints of another coastal system for later next week.
One can certainly run in the current snow cover but its a lot of hard work just to make progress and I'm not sure anyone would want to spend 4-5 hours doing so. But we should wait & see what things look like after this next system rolls through - lots could change but I'm not optimistic it will be for the better...
@cmorse: It's supposed to be mostly rain along the coast this weekend.
I think it will be good for us (hopefully) but likely bad for Gay City, which is way closer to the presumed track of snowy things. It's not looking good. I do want it to be actually fun!
We've been out on both the areas this morning and I'm afraid we've come to the decision that we should postpone the weekend. There is significant rainfall predicted for the next week, but even if the snow all melts it's looks like being a miserable wet and cold weekend, and we would like the juniors to have some fun.
It took me nearly 40 minutes to run 2 miles this morning, which is way too physical for younger athletes.
Sorry - if people have a good suggestion for a new date I'm very willing to hear it - I haven't even thought about the season yet.
Too late to reconsider? I'm assuming all they got this past weekend was rain, and the current forecast is for more rain midweek and then cool but dry over the weekend. And by then the snow in the woods might be not much?
Just wondering....
There wasn't much rain in southern CT; there's still plenty of snowpack, in places well over mid-thigh deep (obviously less in other places, but still not ideal for orienteering).
In any case, since Becky (and others) were doing this on an entirely voluntary basis, I think people should happily abide by her judgment that this is not going ahead. Put on your own training camp this weekend if you don't like her decision.
I've had a few e mails saying people are very happy to reschedule, and I stand by my decision (especially those parents of the youngest children) that while it's likely possible to go this weekend, it'll be more fun a little later on. Clint is checking his diary and we should hopefully have a new date soon.
The camp is likely rescheduled for March 23rd/24th. We will be confirming the areas over the next couple of days and will confirm for sure when that's done.
Thanks for your patience!
