| fthfl stwrd rudy: | "Seems like more terrain speed workouts are in order. "
maybe combined w/ some judicious compass work under pressure. Or perhaps there was just some rust under the needle:) ? Arrrghh - now I feel I'm being too negative, but I'm forcing myself to comment so I will feel the pain next time I'm leaving the control. Thanks for posting the routes. Gratifying to read about your good results - bet you will only get improve as you do more a-meets. |

| Ricka: | Looking at your Sunday Blue splits, two things struck me:
1. As the end neared, you picked up your pace nicely. 2. Consistency pays: a steady dose of mostly 6th to 9th ranked splits earns you 4th. Ie. Errors Kill! |

| ebuckley: | Rudy, you do seem to have the negative thing down. What did I write to give you the idea I was struggling with bearing?
Rick, I think a lot of people overcooked the long leg (16). My split wasn't that impressive there, but I had something left for the rest of the course. And, yes, it was a pretty clean run and that counts for a lot. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | Just observing something i noticed on your route maps - that on many occasions, you seemed to leave the control in a relatively straight line, but not in the right direction. Of course, it might just have been the way you drew your routes on the maps.
Guess I shouldn't worry about being critical, my guess is you're not easily offended, and some helpful discussion might come out of it. |

| ebuckley: | It's a public forum; write whatever you want. I've just noticed that you tend to focus on the negative.
As for direction out of controls, I frequently aim off by as much as 15-20 degrees. I'm willing to go extra distance to pick up a handrail. In the case with the #4 disaster on Saturday morning, I ran left to get through the reentrant more quickly. The problem wasn't direction, it was map reading. When I crossed the trail, it was angling downhill so I though it had to be the lower trail. In fact, the upper trail angles down also before the junction. Once I crossed that trail I just started blasting figuring I'd surely not miss the second trail. Huge mental error to not stop sooner when the trail didn't appear, but not an indication of direction problems. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | If these recent posts of mine are negative PLEASE tell me whats positive:
"Nice run! Must be a little frustrating to miss 3 hours by 15 seconds, but then its just a round number. Just 29 seconds slower than L.A.!" "i've heard rumors of stories...PR's by the walking wounded. we'll keep our fingers crossed. you nailed the right attitude in your blog entry." "congrats - good to see all that hard work pay off - half marathon pr then red course next day. can you believe it. if you havent heard Dave was about 4 min behind you." |

| ebuckley: | Well, that first one is obviously negative. It frames both the PR and the age group win as a failures (missed the time goal and got beat by somebody younger in a completely different race). I'm not offended, just noting a pattern. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | Also, if you noticed, I said 'nice run' instead of 'awesome, mindboggling run' or 'absolutely stupendous wonderful run'. And it was definitely a SLAM that the person who I pointed out beat you by 29 seconds was not even a runner! Just a lousy cyclist!
You're right, there is a vicious pattern there that is just so blatantly negative it should be brought to the attention of the American Society of Alarming Pessimists, ASAP! |

| Cristina: | Not to get in the middle of something that is perhaps not my business (okay, I will get in it), but I get the same vibes as Eric. I don't know if you *try* to be negative (it seems like you don't mean to be), but that's the way it often comes across. Maybe it's got something to do with the unemotional textual medium. Just my 2 cents. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | Hmmmm....mmmmm? Sorry, I thought I was being upbeat and encouraging. That would be the opposite effect that I was hoping for. If i'm not, then I might as well stop commenting. I appreciate your telling me! |

| ebuckley: | Damn Rudy, lighten up. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | All right, I'm on it. My goal is about 5 pounds in the next month and a half. |
