Delyn:
We have a proposal from the Empire State Games to host the New York State Championships on July 27. The Games are in Rochester from July 24-28. They are being leased to a corporation headed by Scott Bell who was formerly the head of the Monroe County Sports Commission. Ideally he would like us to have an event on Friday and Saturday so that the athletes would be here on Thursday night for the opening ceremonies.

New York State is no longer providing financial support so competitors pay a fee to participate. $50 for adults and $40 for students. The club would be reimbursed for our expenses in hosting the meet. They would provide medals and t-shirts. It would not be a OUSA "A" meet -. We could probably do it at Mendon so we wouldn't have create a new map. We would be free to create our own rules and categories. We could use a qualifier system like Ski O or just have an open competition. It would only be open to NYS residents.

I am not sure how it would be received by the NYS "O" community and how many people would attend. It does seem like a good opportunity to promote the sport and the ESG brand is well known throughout the State. It might be a good way to get more kids interested. They are working with some large corporate sponsors like Dick's Sporting Goods so it might help with some local sponsorship opportunities down the line. Apparently the privately run model for state games has been successful in other states.

Any interest or comments

All,

I think this is a great opportunity to promote the sport. The O Clubs “almost” align well with the ESG regions:

Western = BFLO + ROC
Central = CNYO
Adirondack = EMPO + AOK
Hudson Valley = HVO (partial) + USMAOC
New York City = HVO (partial)
Long Island = LIOC

To get the most bang for the buck for the participants, perhaps we could do the following:

Friday – Sprint event at a park near the city (or RIT?)
Saturday AM – Middle (or Classic) at Mendon Ponds
Saturday PM – Relay at Mendon Ponds

The ESG awards could be based on combined time of the Sprint and Middle (or Classic). The relay would be for the NY Club Championship. I would recommend a three-person, Sprint duration (if not course-setting style) relay to keep things exciting. Each club could enter a “primary” team, and unlimited additional teams. The primary teams would start a bit later.

The ESG has three categories: Scholastic, Open and Masters. The scholastic is 17 and under as of 8/31, so not orienteering age. We may want to add Yellow and White courses as non-ESG categories for M/F-14 and M/F-12 types, to be junior-friendly. I think there is some flexibility with Masters categories – I would suggest just using the ski-o categories rather than five-year categories.

I think a decision should be made quickly, so we can get an “Orienteering” button under the sports listings at the ESG site sooner, rather than later.

Thanks,

I assume that ESG awards would only be for residents of NY, but would the competition be open to non residents? That could potentially draw some additional participation numbers.

I think we could open it to others at a reduced fee.

The ESL effort fell short of funding this year. We are offering a one day adventure race on July 27th. See our website for latest info. http://roc.us.orienteering.org
I think it is going involve biking, kayaking and foot orienteering. Details should be up on the site soon.
