Peg and Erin and I are starting to talk about having a training camp for both juniors and seniors in Arizona at and around this meet. Any juniors out there interested? Senior team? Erin is willing to do set some exercises. We could potentially extend it into the school vacation week, if kids have a school vacation week then. (Do you?)

I'd be interested in training opportunities the week before the meet, if they would be open to hack-type orienteers that would like to improve.

Ditto what Oslug said...!

We've gone to Tucson for this meet the last couple of years. Will probably go again. Even more likely if there is training. Only the Monday is a school holiday.

Not a kid, but my school has winter break that week and I am still very much hoping/planning to be in Tucson that week. Not sure that I would be able to do things throughout the entire week (hoping to do a bit of backpacking) but I would be around some of the time and I can certainly help design/plan exercises or itinerary and hang some streamers or something.

My biggest recommendation is to go somewhere really un-prickly as soon as possible after the Catalina events. :-)

Ah. prickly. Good balance & coordination & fast-reaction-time training.
There are such lovely unprickly maps around Tucson, too.

Some Washington schools have mid-winter break, and if they do, a good chunk have their break around this weekend.

However, the weekend Tucson events conflict with our local school league champs (essentially our biggest local event of the year). I'm guessing there won't be many juniors skipping out on that.

OK, thanks.

Have any dates been decided for the training week? Need to make flight arrangements.

I will be in Tuscon for work from 4-7 March. Any recommendations of nice maps in the area to go for a run?

Yes! If you're staying in town and want to get on something very Sonoran-desert like (without being treacherous), definitely check out Arthur Pack Regional Park. Small park, but neat map - individual large cacti are mapped and are one of the primary features of navigation.

If you can get out of the city then I would recommend heading south to the Kentucky Camp/Greaterville/Box Canyon area to run in the beautiful grasslands.

You can see samples of some of the maps on the club website. You can also contact some members of the club (try Dave or Ludwig) through the contact page to see about getting some maps.

Update on Tucson training camp:
(1) The B meet is on, Fri-Mon
(2) The training will happen, in really gorgeous terrain near Tucson, during the week following the B meet
(3) I need RSVPs to help with planning

In the next couple of days we'll pull together a more formal announcement.
Training is a Junior Team fundraiser. All advanced runners are welcome.
