Discussion: One Cowboy Relay

This year's One Cowboy Relay features 5 loops with breathtaking views of the Laramie Range peneplain (admit it, you didn't think that word would come up today, did you?) and even the unlit lights of Cheyenne. In a somewhat different arrangement than the ordering of the speakers at the Republican National Convention (is it over yet?), each new loop will be better than the preceding loop. And at the end of it, there will be a winner. It will be so fine! ; )

Fun race today. And here's what the loops look like (ignore the start, was a little late pushing the button):

Yesterday somebody asked me "how do they choose teams for the relay?". I had to respond "What part of ONE COWBOY don't you understand?

Conditions for the race were ideal--temps a few degrees off of what they have been for the past few days, a light breeze sufficient to blow away any lingering, used up air, and light to moderate cloud cover for most of the time. And the sage was as good and proud as it ever way. Just ask Sam (Listwak) about that.

Doug Berling started 4 minutes late. He said: "I'm gonna run 'em all down one by one, and hit 'em up with my lasso, just see if don't." I warned him this might not be an optimum strategy, given the presence of a (former?) US Champion in the field (Eric Bone), not to mention the defending champion from last year, the Norwegian transplant JP Lande. But this did not discourage Doug in the least, and he did in fact work his way up to a pretty fine 20th when all was said and done. The way Doug put it was: "I simply ran out of space and time." As we all do sooner or later. And this too will be acknowledged to be true: all things must pass.

Partial results (5 loops of an unprecedented caliber of excellence, not to mention route choice, and about how long it turned out to be):

1 Eric Bone 42.15
2 John Goodwin 47.02
3 JP Lande 52.29

Results after the first 20 get sketchier, but not necessarily any less accurate. Note that Janet Tryson claims a tie with Eileen Breseman, but we have not yet heard Eileen's side of the story.

22 Peter Dady 75.31
23 Sam Listwak 75.31
24 Mark Parsons ????
25 Jim Hall 78.41
26 Michael Rounds 78.28
27 Gavin Wyatt-Mair 81.26
28 Eileen Breseman 83.21
28 Janet Tryson 83.21
30 Steve Dornseif 86.41

Deteriorating amounts of accuracy and increasing amounts of sweat on the results sheets could be noticed for the remaining results, plus several runners in this group were rumored to have made disparaging comments about the insufficient amounts of climb during the race. The order of finish is probably roughly correct, however.

32 Gary Kraght 88.31
33 Einar Viddal 91.18
34 Peter Goodwin 91.41

Correction: It was pointed out to me today that last year's winner was not JP Lande (Ingebrigtssen) but in fact was Graham Baird. A quick reveiw of the records showed that to be correct, and--I have to laugh at myself--as I thought back on it, I was able to remember taking Graham's picture as he soared from the south up the final hill to claim the victory. My apologies to Graham!

An absolutely fantastic race - every one of the races was fantastic - as usual. Thanks Mikell for a great week!
