So last week I just completed a very fun Army HMMWV land nav / orienteering course using GPS as the sole navigation aid for finding CPs, no maps allowed...so it was almost like a vehicular Geocacheing where the cache was just an orienteering CP. It was a blast, which has me wondering where things are at in the sport with vehicular orienteering, like off-road terrain vehicles (OTV) and such. Has anyone ever experienced an OTV orienteering event? Or other type of vehicular orienteering? Is there a group / club that does these events? I definitely enjoyed the experience enough to do it again, so I thought somebody here might be involved or experienced in this arena.

Aren't those road rallies?

I would be leery of OTV orienteering because of the damage those vehicles can do to the environment. Please keep them on established trails or ATV parks.

I saw there was some sort of OTV park beside Anza Borrego and thought it could make for very cool orienteering (notwithstanding the environmental issues).

From July 1 to September 30, the terrain on the southern half of the Moses Lake Sand Dunes map is open to ORV's. With the trail network and pothole ponds, it that area would make for an interesting course, similar to ski or mountain bike orienteering. The northern half of the map is off-limits to ORV's year-round.

Unfortunately, when I went out to look at the environmental impact of the 2010 event there 4 months later... I found that one rogue ORV in the "off limits" area had a significantly higher impact than 350 orienteers.

Vector, that is absurdly cool. Jealous.

Once, the idea of dirtbike-o really excited me, but then I realized the overlap of dirtbike enthusiasts and o-enthusiasts (o-thusiasts? anybody? is this thing on?) is likely a lonely one. That said, any of the California SVRA's would be absolutely perfect for what you're thinking. And there's always the (formerly Paris-)Dakar rally if you want to go real big.

Ok, Black Rock Desert 4WD orienteering is now on my bucket list, thanks!! Thst looks like it would be a great experience and looks like a good challenge with the precision given the absence of landmarks.

Understood on enviro issues, I was wondering if that might be part of the OTV-O bit. I was expecting that if there was an OTV-O of sorts that it would utilize 4WD trails, kind od like how ski-o generally utilizes x-country ski trails...or use designated OTV areas. The HMMWV course I did utilized pre-existing trails.
