Discussion: Orienteering in Mongolia?

in: Orienteering; General

Spike:
Orienteering Today reports that Mongolia joined IOF in April 2005. I poked around the IOF web page and couldn't find any info. I did some Internet searches and didn't find any info.

I looked at the Russian and Kazahk federations pages thinking they might point me to Mongolia. No luck (though I can't really make any sense of the alphabets).

I've emailed IOF, but haven't yet had a response. Any other suggestions?

Ask Randy. He's probably been there already.

I didn't search exhaustively and my reading comprehension in Russian is only middling good but I feel safe in asserting that neither the Russian nor the Kazakh federation web site is treating this as headline news. You could come to COCs/WMOC's and try to buttonhole someone from the Russian Far East (I didn't notice Mongolia anywhere in the COC entry list, though we appear to have a dozen Europeans not residing in Canada to spice up M/F20/34 on top of all the masters from hither and yon) but I'd give the IOF a chance first.

Although I did find this 1997 Camel Trophy Mongolia if you want to follow up every lead.

Also upcoming Mongolian scout jamboree including orienteering.

Sudden, Thanks for the suggestion. It worked. I've learned that Mongolia has a federation, but no maps, and I've got an email address for the general secretary of the O' federation in Mongolia.

Well, that is right about the opposite of the prevailing situation in Hawaii, which has a map, but no federation. Probably any orienteering expedition to Mongolia should start off with a visit to a Hawaiian O' map.

I have several copies of the Kapiolani Park "map" from Hawaii, and although it does consist of paper and ink, it would be pretty dubious for actual navigational purposes. It's missing common symbols like... contour lines. This covers pretty much the same area, and would be entirely superior, if it had north lines.

While being on vacation in Hawaii I had wonderful runs each day through the Kapiolani Park. Good venue for the fast sprint! No contour lines though - it is table flat :( Hmm, should I start thinking to retire there and start an O club?

Kapiolani Park was my Honolulu default run in the early '70s...Waikiki & Diamond Head were background. Sprint venues abound.

Don't we all want to go to Mongolia for an O venue...

The World Military Championships has a bit of a history of participants from weird and wonderful places (who mostly end up with results which make you wonder if, in the event of war, whether they'd be able to find where the war was).
