Thanks. Interesting question that got me thinking. I don't use a HRM unless I've been ill, so the target intensity is largely perceived exertion and I guess my reference point is how I feel during a track race say 800/1500m which is 90-100% and zone 5. Personally I find shorter intervals less taxing and avoid running them at full speed-so I factor in that as well relative to a 200m sprint (27-28 s max)
Running say 600 or 800m reps at 40 sec per 200 would be a 90% effort for sure.
The last 400 in this series was around that so I logged it in the 5 zone. Mind and body stuff I guess:-)

YEs I think a HR monitor would be correct to judge % effort. Except in a 400 it seems it takes probably 200 to get HR up to speed, so maybe look at HR at the end of the effort to see what your % is. Does that make sense?
