Discussion: "new style of color orienteering"
in: Orienteering; Gear & Toys;
Hi,
I am relatively new to orienteering. I am switching to thumb compass for my orienteering. I was recommended Model 8 Rainbow thumb compass from moscompass. Been told it is for 'new style of color orienteering' and handy for adventure racing.
Can somebody point me to some resources where I can get more info about using this colorful compass & this new style of 'color orienteering' !.
Any info would be much appreciated.
Silva produces the gold standard for compasses with color markings on the bezel. Their model is named Spectra. The methods in the following document would be mostly applicable to the Moscompass model.

I have always thought the Moscompass Model 8 to be strange with the color markings not continuing all around the bezel. I suspect that Silva has some kind of patent that would be violated had they printed colors all the way around. I really have no idea, just a guess. But if I was going to start using that kind of compass, I would go with Silva to get the colors all around.
I run with a Moscow Model 3. I like it much.
I tried a Moscow model 8 several years ago and found the colors so distracting I couldn't use it.
I've got the Silva with the coloured bezel and I don't think I've ever even noticed that it is coloured when I've been racing. Certainly doesn't affect how I use the compass.
For the colour zone use, the Silva Spectra is far better than the Moscompass Rainbow 8, but more than twice as expensive. I used Spectras for many years but am now using a standard Moscompass 3, and turning the bezel on the run to parallel the North lines on the map.
