Live GPS tracking as usual.
More (in Finnish)
here
So, three hours to go.
Here we go. Still lots of snow, so it's more like street O. There was two runners with same ID, I had take them off for a moment (I now I identify them by their IP address).
Interesting split between Kimmo and Tuukka here on 16.
And again on 17. I like left better.
But Hirppa got stuck in the snow...
I'm having some dropout issues with the RG server. It stops after a few mins and I have to reload to get it going again.
ok, good to know. Works here just fine. But I think I know what it is about.
Timo's on the wrong trail
That took 13 sec more than Hirppa's more straight variation.
Nice use of the registration marker as a GO control :)
Still too cold for the alligators I guess?
I mowed the lawn this morning!
First time I've tried using the start and split lines before. Pretty nice. The 1 sec update makes drawing those a little awkward. No too bad.
So Vacant's track was off quite a bit throughout the race. Was (s)he just using the internal antenna or something like that?
And again, mass start in couple of minutes.
Whoops, I missed most of it today :(. On the plus side, I was late because I was running a course this morning - beautiful day here!
Jagge, I've been meaning to ask you what races/trainings may be available the week before Jukola this year. I'm thinking about the Suunto Games the weekend before and looking for other things during the week. Would also like to check out your typical live tracking on-site setup if possible.
I'm not Jagge but here's all the official competitions of Finland:
https://irma.suunnistusliitto.fi/irma/public/compe...
And here's all the foot-o comps in southern most Finland:
https://irma.suunnistusliitto.fi/irma/public/compe...
I believe you mean Forssa Games with the "other thing during the week":
http://www.forssagames.fi/index_eng.html
Just checked out some parts of the headcam footage from tonight's Yökuppi. It was surprisingly good quality. Hope the carrier of it would've been also.. I'll put a link to it in the morning.
What do you mean by on site setup? Usually there is none.
Open events here:
http://suunnistavauusimaa.fi/wp/wp-content/uploads...
I'd recommend these:
- Monday 11.6. IR Pirttimäen ulkoilumaja Bembölestä 5km Kunnarlantietä, Kunnarlantie 110,Espoo
- Tuesday 12.6. ER Veikkola +9 km Turuntieltä (110), Soidentaantie, Kirkkonummi
- Wednesday 13.6. RaVi Äijäsmäki Tie 110, 10 km Nummenkylästä Turkuun, Sitarlan liittymä
- Thursday 14.6. KU Böleberget Tieltä 148 Kuninkaantien 11698 risteyksestä, Keravantie 100
The video I promised.
Seems like I read eddie's post only partially correct (it was 1am). Nevermind the Forssa Games :) Good that Jagge got it right.
Tonight the last time before summer break. Start in a bit over 1½ h.
One interesting man in tracking will be Hungarian national team member Máté Baumholczer.
Suuh-weeeeet!! Yo-Kuppi, Yo-Kuppi!!!
I click on this thread just to see how
excited eddie gets each time!
Sad but true. Except Commodore 64 is closer to my own era :)
Watch the race instead!
Runners are heading to the start now. Wouldn't you just love to see this at lots of US events? We need more than one fan to make it happen. We need a fan with a modern cell phone - not two paper cups and a string like I have.
Did Timo punch the wrong first control or is he the only one with that fork?
Aleksi didn't punch either?
Aleksi's track has been offset to the W since warmup.
He punched right for sure. And he is not the only one with that fork, just the only one with tracking.
Yipes. Chaos has ensued on that penninsula. Everybody running in different directions. Headlamps everywhere!
Hirppa in trouble (the only tracked B runner) - 3 and half minutes lost there.
Looks like he's entered twice (Two Kimmo's). Is the second entry just an extra in the runner's file with an incorrect ID number?
Week ago he had two phones, just testing gear and stuff...
Ah. Also Aleksi's track has been especially poor tonight. Any idea if its some peculiarity with his hardware or the way he's wearing it?
Using internal gps, and internal gps isn't that good in his phone. And phone in back pocket. I guess.
BTW, I usually use gmap-pedometer to calibrate these yökuppi maps. I click around the record road network, export it as gpx using this
bookmarklet and calibrate map by adusting it on the map with 3 points on RG.
Yes, Aleksi (
All-in) had only a phone, no BT-GPS-Logger+phone like all the others.
Since he was a logger lighter, he won the whole thing with clear margin.
Yes I made a big mistake like I have done almost every race this spring but it was just for entertainment.
Yökuppi 10th anniversary race tonight. 3 and half hours to go.
Yeah, HBD Yökuppi!
Same place and date than 10 years ago (thus monday and not wednesday).
What's that?!?
Can it be?!??
Yes, yes it is!!!!
ITS....
YO - KUPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!! AAGHGHGHGGAAAGGGHHHHHHHH!!
I'm seeing a map with a huge, completely flat, featureless area of completely open woods... (ie mostly blanked out).
Am I watching too early? (I clicked the link from the first post in this thread)
reload. (I used it to calibrate map without revealing courses 15 minutes too early - not that it would have had any matter).
Whoa, the area around 6-7-8 looks like great fun (during the day).
Auuu yeaaahhh, here we go!!!
Courses are as same as possible as in the very fist Yökuppi race 10 years ago. Some runners may have guessed, hard to say.
Ah, thanks, got it. What's in that hexagon?
I believe Antti Pa is AP Terkelsen, wrong name forgotten from a previous race.
Tomi and Timo make it look easy.
Yes. The rest of them are pretty much lost at the moment :)
Tomi had a little trouble with that three way intersection near 11. Reminds me of a little misadventure I had on the roads near the end of my Jukola leg this year.
So far all except one has entered OOB on the way to #10. I wonder why it is so difficult. And right now the last one left did the same...
Interesting that Harri and Teemu went to the same place as Tomi/Timo on the OOB near #10. Maybe another control there?
No controls there, it must be some kind of parallel error. And stripes may make it hars to read the area you are making it harder to relocate.
Lost tracking a couple of minutes ago. They all came back, but the tracks prior to that time are gone (as are Tomi and one other).
Looks like someone cleared all tracks from the server. Hirppa or Ale by accident? Someone was correcting runner's names ten minutes before the start, so there was someone doing something under the hood.
I'm always worried about doing something dumb with the software during an event and accidentally deleting the data.
Right, it was Terkelsen, that session just showed up on his AP log, phone clinent dumps it threre. Track is stored in memory card so nothing is lost permanently.
Yes, I admit, I corrected almost all the names about 10min prior to the start but did nothing else. Did it the way I always do before the start. Could it have somehow messed up the system..?
I also wonder why my dot isn't there? On the phone's screen everything was OK.
But boy was it fun again after such a break! Even with not the best of terrains (
Devil's Nest area aside).
I think Esa may have visited the Devil's Nest. I wonder if there were any baby devils in it?
@Jagge/Hirppa, is there any way to restore the lost GPS tracks? Or could you give a short comment (in Finnish to Yökuppi site) what happened. Nevertheless, great weather, quite a lot of folk and fun event.
It's on again in about an hour.
Wednesday!!!!! YO-kuppi YO-kuppi!! Hey yo-yo-yo Hey yo-yo-yo
Unfortunately my new manager has selected Wed afternoons at 2 PM as our weekly group meeting time. Guess I'll have to bring a laptop to the meeting :)
Great weather, dark night, 74 runners, campfire near the start.
One hour to the start today?
Yes. I haven't got map yet, so is somebody with map reads this just take photo and email it to me. If I don't get map there will be just blank map without courses (if I can find the map from web). If not, I may make one with Karttapullautin.
Did you get the email? Jones send it few minutes ago.
Yep. Ready to go, plenty of time left.
MinnaR is running A course with my gps and mapping phone.
Woohoo! I can just catch the end of things...
Double digits for the live tracking crowd tonight. Nice to see such a large group. Think you can double this number by the season finale in Lahti? Oooh, on Halloween night....muahh ahh ahhhhhh!
Unfortunately I think that was about the max we can do at the moment. And cause the symbiansign page doesn't exist anymore, with this configuration the number of phones won't get higher.
Though today we got to know who the "vacant 70" (next time Pekka Re) is and apparently he got the phone working pretty recently. Have to ask him how.
Maybe he used android or a nicer kind of symbian - I beleive signing is needed only for some nasty models. I have python tracker script for meego in case someone has that pocket awesomeness.
Live again. Some häslinki again, I did set up wrong map/courses and had to redo map images and calibration last minute - or actually after last minute since first runner was already on his way to the start triangle while I was doing it.
As the Earth moves around the Sun, Yokuppi will slowly come out of eclipse behind my Wed meeting schedule. Maybe it'll go faster if I shoot arrows at the meetings. Either way its win-win :)
About in two hours it's on again. Forecast says it'll be quite heavy rain.
Individual start for this and next one. Then most likely couple of mass starts.
Yeeahhhhhh!!!!! Look at 'em go!
See Spot Run. Run Spot Run.
F5 for correcting the names. It's wet here.
Kimmo is on course!! Go!
Uh oh, 2PM. I have to go too :(
I think Hirppa's compass is broken.
Excellent guess.
Already in the beginning. And my spare compass at the car has a huge bubble in it so decided to go for it the Ikonen-style (not the most recent Ikonen-style though). It's just that this wasn't really a no-compass-friendly course this time...
Yow. Looks like a shark got you in one of those marshes. At least you still have your thumb!
In about 4½ hours, one of the largest Yökuppis will start again. Way over 100 runners. Two reasons for this: 1) district's night champs 2) fri-sat Finnish night champs.
Also the place is worthy for this kinda event. Thierry G. said this was his best terrain/competition he was in 2010 (Finnish middle dist champs) and it was also awarded by world of o for best middle dist track of the same year. So one can expect some curves in the lines. At least from me and my bubble spare compass.
If we see the guys in time, most of the tracking devices will be given to the top night orienteers of Finland. E.g. H20 ranking #1 (Miika Suominen).
Cause it's district night champs, there's even start times:
http://suunnistus.iso-henna.com/AMyo2012/Lahtoluet...
Awesomeness!!
Are the ABC groups some sort of "Night Elite" classes? I see most of the live tracking guys are in there.
Will the venerable Jagge himself be wearing a wire tonight?
Rumour tells that for the first time this year, Jagge will be wearing a wire.
Since this is a district night champs, all the people that are from this district (Lahti area) and wanna participate it, they are in their own classes (e.g. H35 Kristian Leppänen, aka Terkelsen in AP). Rest are running the basic ABC (though this time B is devided to two). You can see who is running what
here (around mid page).
Clean race for Jagge so far.
I had some gaps in the tracks for Kimmo and Timo. Timo was being shown in the correct place and was moving along, but his recorded track stopped on the way to #1. A reload of RG fixed things. Any idea what causes this type of dropout?
Heh heh, looks like Toni drove home with his GPS still running! Or he was running really fast.
Its Wednesday...and we all know what that means!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah. Mass start this time so should be more entertaining. Start in an hour.
The runners are gathering. The course is blanked out before the start, except that the number "5" is there just to add some intrigue. What will happen at number 5?!?! A special treat? Some hidden danger? Is this the end of our heroes? Will they be dashed to bits on the jagged (Jagge) rocks below?!
#5 appears to be a very small brown dot. Its either a micro-knoll or a freckle.
Wow, Sulttaani is dialed-in!
Mass start in about 3h. Could be again entertaining since it's the same terrain I made
couple of extra loops last year.
Looks like a fun area...in the daytime :) Looks like a nightmare of depressions at night.
Pekka went right through 149 and then looped back NW before returning. Just didn't see it the first time?
I'm a little worried about eddie's well being since there's nothing here from tonight's yökuppi.. Was a blast yet again.
2002 Jukola terrain.
Eddie, you know you are a celebrity here now:
Story in Finnish
Google translate of it
Rats! Sorry I missed today. Crazy week with bad ankle injury on Sunday, and I'm heading up to NAOC early tomorrow morning for the long race weekend. Hopefully life will be much easier after Sunday evening :)
Thanks for the links to the article. I was wondering when it was going to print.
Apparently Neil has read the whole thing through to find such a peculiarity :)
The whole sentence goes something like this: For possible illness time (illness pause) he has plans to join Eddie and watching yökuppi live from home.
And eddie, as you say in the article, you must attend atleast one competition at some point. You will be a guest of honour.
Next yökuppi will be the last "standard" one. Then there's only the finale left which rumours tells to be rogaining type.
4h and the second last Yökuppi of this season is about to begin. And as I mentioned above, last tracking friendly competition.
Brand new APist
Assu has pretty much won the
A-course but rest of the podium places are still open. All of the top4 guys should be in tracking tonight.
I haven't got map/courses for trackeing yet. If I don't get it soon there will be just a topo map without courses. Not even a pullautus map.
I called someone and he said something should happen about it.
Rats. I'm afraid I'm going to miss the live coverage today :( Have a doc appointment just at the wrong time. I don't know what I was thinking scheduling it for this time slot!!! Guess I should get a smartphone so I can watch on the go. This is a real bummer. Fortunately I can watch the replay later today!
Yökuppi final tonight, score O format. Rumours at Yökuppi web site are telling
this may be the race map (hardly, Hirppa must have made this just in case he gets lost and runs out of the map).
Yeah, 2h and off we go. A course is 80min and B course (which I'm attending) 60min. Not sure will the control point codes show but if they do, cp 83 would be worth 8 points and 34 3p etc.
Jagge, this time I promise I won't make more than 2min of mistakes altogether. I've been on that map quite a few times :)
Am I reading
this correctly? It looks as if....
as if...
the first Yokuppi race of 2013 is NEXT WEDNESDAY?
You are too eager Eddie :) Korttelikuppi is Yökuppi's winter version (street-o).
Here's the calendar for Yökuppi season 2013:
http://www.yokuppi.net/?page=osakisat&kuppi_id=28
So four more weeks. I guess there'll be a new thread then.
Doh!
Four more weeks of winter. The Yökuppi version of Groundhog Day....
