Who's in?

Krille is probably putting out a few streamers (he may have to send me a mail (neil.dobbs@gmail) so I have his email so I can send him control locations).

I have preprinted maps from a couple of years back. Easier and harder courses available. If there's demand, I can plan something funky. There's also a possibility of going down to SUNY Purchase to check out the sprint map afterwards.

Which bit of "Saturday" did you not get, Joe? There will probably be streamers, I can ask the Sanctuary people (hopefully at least one will take part) if it's ok to leave out the streamers, but then you'd have to collect them. It's likely against club policy to send you a pdf of the course...

Oh, and Friday 7.30am at FDR State Park is also happening.

last week sunday was changed to saturday. I figured I would ask. hmm, so you picked up the streamers you put out at Paugussett last weekend and how did Becky get a copy of the paugussett map?

and how did Becky get a copy of the paugussett map?

Different club?

Joe:
to my knowledge wcoc does not have a policy re; club map files and printing/copying or a policy about leaving streamers in the woods.

Right, but Westmoreland is HVO. Maybe HVO has a policy.

Joe:
I get it but thanks for clarifying. Your comment suggests she got the file from a club other than WCOC?

No, I just meant that I figured she got the file from WCOC in the manner that you considered to be normal practice when you asked for a PDF. But Neil is saying that Westmoreland Sanctuary may have issue with streamers that are more restrictive than Paugussett, and HVO may be more into keeping a tight grip on its map data than WCOC is. (NEOC, for example, has a history of making things difficult, which can be an annoyance for people wanting to train.) (I have no idea whether the Paugussett streamers got collected, btw.)

Paugusset streamers were not collected as various members of the club expressed a wish to go back and repeat some of the training. The streamers are tiny and don't appear to be of interest to hungry creatures. Considering people looking for them with a highly accurate map generally had a hard time finding them on Saturday, I doubt they will be getting anyone into trouble.

And WCOC are great about map files and training, especially as many members of the club have benefitted from the three sessions I've done thus far, both on the day and afterwards.

Being silly about maps in a country where there's so little orienteering but a very keen bunch of people to do it is ridiculous. Unless there are serious access issues about the area, then I can understand trying to limit it.

Yes, didn't mean to cause a kerfuffle. HVO have had issues in the past with maps being 'borrowed' and used for commercial purposes and land managers getting peed off and banning orienteering. It's not an issue here, but bear it in mind when complaining about HVO in the future :)

It did actually come up in conversation a couple of days ago, whether we could make some of our maps publicly available for non-commercial use, with a voluntary or honour system for donations towards mapping costs. I have no idea if such things work, but it would be great to get more people in the woods more often.

Westmoreland Sanctuary has a conservationist and the Sanctuary people look after the woods. I don't think they would appreciate streamers going out indefinitely, but fixed duration should be fine. Hopefully Ann will turn up on Sat so I can talk to her about such things.
