Only goes to show our instinct to rub an impact injury is really helping us to recover more quickly. Clever experiment and very convincing results.
And massage doesn't necessarily need to be done by a trained masseur or therapist. After becoming bored with expensive physical therapy sessions three times per week for a shoulder injury, I began experimenting with a similar series of exercises at home, followed by a shower as hot as I could stand, while I massaged the injured shoulder under the stream of water. I've found that daily exercise and hot-water massage are very effective for keeping my shoulder limber and pain-free.
I got needles stuck in my leg today. I hope it works.
