Looking at taking my first dip into using a thumb compass. Am looking at either the Suunto Arrow-6, Moscow Model 8 Rainbow or Moscow Model 3. Looking for any opinions or thoughts on either of the above. Thanks!

I've got all those three compasses and Moscow Model 8 (Rainbow) is my favorite. I ran last season with Arrow-6 but few months ago I changed to Model 8.
It's notable that Arrow-6 has wider needle than Moscow models. Arrow-6 is also much smaller than Moscows. It's just what you like.

I've been using the Silva 6 Nor Spectra. Bought it from the UK and it came in about 4 days. It is a little larger and I find it easier to hold and view at a glance than the Arrow-6.

I used Silva 6 Jet Spectra (2006-2009) but I broke it. I think it's the best thumb compass threre are, but also the most expensive one.

NOR has a very unstable needle, compared to the Jet or Moscompass.

Do any of the aforementioned thumb compasses have non-rotatable housings?

The Silvas have non-rotatable housings (either with the NOR or JET needles).

I think I've narrowed it down to the Moscow 8 or 3. How hard is the transition from bearing to color coding?

Is there really any difference? Do you actually use the numbers?

I've been pretty skeptical of the color coding, especially how the pattern of the 8 seems to be irregular and favoring north, but I'm actually thinking it might be faster to use for rough bearings. That is, that the irregular pattern might be both intentional and a good idea---Basically that it offers a big pattern that is easier for your eye to pick up at a glance.

That can easily be arranged.

Cedarcreek - I was skeptical at first, but the colors work just as you say - they make rough bearings a lot faster and easier.
