I'd like to join in thanking GMOC for a great week-end of orienteering. My relay map and route choices are available at http://www.geocities.com/bgranovskiy/maps.html

Unfortunately, i have no splits as my watch band fell apart seconds before my start.

Huge kudos, too, to Will Hawkins, aka "Billy the Hawk". Running the entire 18 km of the relay solo, the only teams that finished ahead of him were the top four in the (significantly shorter) 8-point category! Outstanding!

An aside for those of you who liked the map. Vladimir Zherdev was my coach in 1991—1992. His approach to O-training can be approximately expressed as following:

"Mondays, you rest: 5—10 km easy jog. Tuesdays, do a warmup (2–4 km and some stretching) and 10×1000 at 3:05–3:10. Wednesdays, a medium-length run, 15—20 km at 4:20&ndash4:30/km. Thursdays, shorter intervals—20×200 or 12×400, do the 400s at 68–70. You should probably do 7–9 km Thursday morning as well. Friday, a tempo run. If you really like it, you can do orienteering on Saturday and Sunday, but it may get in the way of your long run."

I was fooled by Will Hawkin's "team"! I remember thinking that all of the names looked similar.

I'd also like to thank GMOC. I thought they did every single thing exactly right - course setting, map, terrain (including terraforming (adding 10km of trails)!), weather (not too hot), dinner, start-finish area, nice spectating for the relay, swimming area provided, ... It was as close to a perfect event as I think I've ever seen in eleven years and three continents of orienteering.

As for running the relay myself, it was a lot of fun to run past the finish area so many times past an enthusiastic crowd, something you never usually get in orienteering!
