Orienteering USA Competitive Award Winners for 2011 Announced
These awards are meant to recognize and reward outstanding competitive accomplishments by U.S. orienteers during 2011.
Orienteer of the Year is awarded to the best U.S. orienteer in 2011, based on results at national and international events.
-- Winner: Alison Crocker, Amherst, MA, Cambridge Sports Union. US Champion in Short, Middle, Long, Classic, Night, and Relay, plus superb results at both Ski-WOC and WOC.
-- Honorable mention: Sharon Crawford, Frisco, CO, Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club. Gold medal in the Long Distance and Silver medal in the sprint in F65 at the World Masters Champs.
Junior Orienteer of the Year is awarded to the best U.S. orienteer no older than 20 in 2011, based on results at national and international events.
-- Winner: Andrew Childs, Williston, VT, Green Mountain Orienteering Club. US Champion in M20 in Long Distance and Classic, top ranked in M20.
-- Honorable mention: Richard Y. Ebright, North Brunswick, NJ, Delaware Valley Orienteering Association. Silver medal in Open class at US Trail-O’ champs as a junior.
Comet of the Year is awarded to the most improved U.S. orienteer in 2011, based on results at national and international events.
-- Winner: Alexandra Jospe, Newton, MA, Cambridge Sports Union. Always excellent at Ski-O’, made significant improvement in foot-O’, qualified for WOC team, ranking improved 10 points.
Orienteering Team of the Year is awarded to the best USA national or club orienteering team in 2011, based on results at national and international events.
-- Winner: The USA Ski-Orienteering team to the 2011 Ski-Orienteering World Championships, Superb results at Ski-WOC in Sweden.
