Georgia Orienteering Club is excited to announce that Early Registration is now open for the 2012 U.S. Individual Orienteering Championships, scheduled April 13-15 in Carrollton and Newnan, Georgia, just 30 minutes outside of Atlanta.

We're excited because we've been working hard on providing a top notch event for this series of four champs -- the Trail-O, Sprint, Middle, and Long -- and because we've already received early interest from national, international, and junior competitors who have requested early information for their planning purposes. Register now through December 31 and receive the deepest discount of up to $90 off the final (late) registration fees.

The U.S. Champs will feature all new maps on two venues new to orienteering.

The Sprint and Trail-O Champs will be held on April 13 at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton. This 645-acre campus features a complex array of buildings, roads, and wooded terrain ideal for the short fast Sprint, and paved pathways well-suited for Trail-O. The new map is ISSOM standard, 1:5000 scale with 2.5 m contours.

The Middle and Long Champs will be held on April 14-15 at Chattahoochee Bend State Park in Newnan. This brand new 2,900-acre park features three distinct types of terrain and seven miles of river frontage, making it ideal for the Middle and Long Champs. The new maps are ISOM standard, 1:10000 and 1:15000 scales with 3 m contours.

In addition to being the U.S. Champs, Trail-O is a U.S. Ranking Event, and the Sprint, Middle, and Long Champs are World Ranking Events for the M21+ and F21+ classes, as well as the U.S. Team Trials.

On top of all of that, GAOC is hosting a special Celebration on Saturday evening (April 14) with a trio of fun events:

* Join us as we celebrate 31 years of orienteering in Georgia with a reception and a special slide show featuring the development of our club, our club members and the many friends we've made over the years.

* Awards: Cheer the winners of the Trail-O, Sprint, and Long Champs as we acknowledge their excellence performance in the awards program.

* Junior Team Silent Auction: Bid on a selection of items in the silent auction and buy a yummy treat to help raise funds for the Junior Team. Don’t miss the chance to own the 2012 US Champs Quilt, which was custom made for the silent auction.

Don't miss your chance to visit Georgia in the springtime and compete against the nation's best!

Compliments to Georgia OC for an exemplary job. The amount of foresight and advance planning going into the U.S. Champs should establish a new standard for all organizers to follow! You guys are ready with everything about as far in advance as when most other clubs just begin thinking about these same items.

Thanks, T/D.

Two noteworthy innovations from a registration point of view.

The first is that we are using the new version of Kent Shaw's O-Signup, now that it has been adopted by OUSA and incorporated into the OUSA website.

The second is that we are offering online waivers so you can now do all your registration online. We haven't taken away checks or paper waivers, so folks will have their choice.

Kent and the OUSA Web Group have worked very hard on this and I think a few teething problems should be expected. The site is fully functional, but work is continuing on the appearance in various browsers and on various devices. Please give them a chance to get things worked out. This was only approved at the Oct 22 OUSA Board meeting and working all this out by Nov 1 was a herculean task. Congratulations and kudos to them!

There are two full months for early registration, two full months for regular registration, then another full month for late registration, so we don't think anyone will be left out.

Looks great! Registration was straightforward. The only request I would make is to post a link to registered competitors more prominently on the GAOC page. I was able to find a list by going to the registration page on the OUSA website, but it's not obvious. Putting it on the registration part of the page or even the home page would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Great idea! We just added an option on our left navigation called "Registered Competitors" so you can see who has registered.

Perfect, Laurie! Thank you. It is nice to have a very easy to find link for the registered cometititors. And, such a quick response is a huge bonus. :)

Not something for the website probably, but does anyone have any links to maps from nearby? The description of the forest areas sounds fantastic! I think I will have to add a new state to my visited list.

You could check RouteGadget on the GAOC website. McIntosh Reserve is right across the river. Joe Kurz and FDR are not so far away.

McIntosh is known for Chief McIntosh who died in a hail of bullets, shot by his kin for selling the tribes property. The Joe Kurz map, called Thunder Road, is notable for reportedly having the most stills per sq km of any O-map in the world. FDR SP abuts the Little White House where FDR died.

The blog is a good source of info. I believe the terrain is the most enjoyable I have ran in here in GA.

I attended the GNC a few years ago and thoroughly enoyed it. I have no reason to believe the event will not be a good a one. However -- "The new maps are ISOM standard, 1:10000 and 1:15000 scales with 3 m contours." is a contradiction as ISOM standard is not 3m contour interval.
