OUSA NATIONAL TEAMS EVENT

As most people know, OUSA fields world championship teams in Foot, Ski and Trail orienteering. Foot and Ski O have junior and senior teams. Foot O also supports sending a team to the World University Games every two years. Currently OUSA is unable to provide any funding for the teams so the task of raising funds falls on the executive steering committees of each team. Depending on the year, the teams need to raise between $30,000 -$50,000 to cover entry fees and accommodations for team members. Transportation and other expenses are covered by team members and their families. Contributions from the orienteering community, clubs and family members cover a small portion of the total amount needed each year. The Team ESCs try to raise the remainder through bake sales, food concessions, silent auctions, clinics, special orienteering events etc.

The Team's would ESCs would like to propose an OUSA Team’s event every spring similar to NOD. Local clubs could designate a spring meet as Team's Day and donate all or some of the proceeds to the OUSA Team's Fund. If the hosting club has some Team members or alumni they could be expected to take a major role such as meet director, mapper or course setter. Clubs that don’t have any team members could request help from the teams’ ESC. Team members could serve as course designers or course consultants without actually being on site. Some clubs could simply designate a local meet and do all of the work themselves. OUSA could support this effort by producing banners and posters to publicize the events and merchandise like t-shirts or hats that could be sold at the meet. Graphics could be as simple as "Orienteering USA Team's Supporter 2012”. This system would allow team members to help their own and smaller other clubs and not have to travel to an "A" meet to fundraise. It also provides clubs with an organized way to support the teams each year and to get some extra help for their local meets.

Comments most welcome.

Thanks,

Linda & Rick

From the standpoint of a team member, this sounds great! I hope that there are some clubs out there that think so too.

Sign me up for some long-distance course designing!

Suggestion for shirt/hat/whatever:
"US Orienteering Teams Supporter" with no year specified (so same print setup can be used multiple years), then offer a different style/color/product each year.

Sounds like a great idea; I hope all clubs are willing to dedicate an event to support the US O teams.

Are Team funds distributed as need-based aid?

Team funds are usually disbursed directly to vendors.

Vendors like airlines, hotel, and stuff? So divided evenly among Team members?

Vendors more like WOC 20xx. The Federation pays entry and accommodation fees to the WOC organizers. For all team members who participate.

Which clubs currently have annual fund-raiser events, and who do they benefit? And what style of events are they? Maybe there are certain best practices out there for raising funds at orienteering events.

For example, CascadeOC organizes the MoboGoGlobo! event in March, which benefits our local junior league. It's our least traditional event of the year, so it lends itself well to a fun fundraiser.
