Hi,

Does anyone know of midweek events in Vienna this week or can point me to some maps that can be easily gotten to from the city center? Thanks!

Here:
http://www.olc-wienerwald.at
you can find one of the Vienna clubs. Unfortunately the webpage is only in German, don't know if you speak german.
Doesn't look like there are any competition midweek, but they have some maps that are reachable by public transport from the city center. You can find an overview about them here:
http://www.olc-wienerwald.at/?p=karten
Easily reachable by public transport should be at last every map with Prater in the name and the Kurpark Oberlaa one. I'm sure some of the others, too, but as I'm not from Vienna (only a regular visitor of a friend there) I don't know for sure for others. You have to ask the club.
Maps are ordered at that mail adress:
office@olc-wienerwald.at
But they are writing that they send them per post, so if you're already in Vienna and need them in a hurry you have to ask if there's another way.

Can someone help me find out if there are any local events in Vienna, Austria between July 15 and 19?
Thanks

Hi Barb,

As mm-ha mentioned I'd definitely have a look at olc-wienerwald - my understanding is that they're the big club in Vienna but there are other smaller ones. Based on their website they don't seem to have any events during that date range. It might, nonethless be useful to contact office@olc-wienerwald.at which goes to Erich Simkoviks. I e-mailed him last summer when I was in Vienna and found him to be super helpful and friendly.

Another lead to try is www.wolv.at which is the Vienna Orienteering Association.

Good luck!

Hi all, reviving this thread as I will be in Vienna this coming week (April 13-19) and am looking for maps.

I have emailed office@olc-wienerwald.at as given on the http://www.olc-wienerwald.at site and here but haven't heard anything back yet. Does anyone have any other contact info or leads? I'm looking to buy some maps and can have them sent to my hotel or pick them up somewhere, whatever.

Thanks!

I'm in Vienna this week as well so I'm also keen on getting some maps too.

If you send me an email reminder, I'll look and see what maps I have when I get home (that I could scan and email). There are some nice maps of Wiener Wald (just NW of the city, accessible with public transit) if you want forest instead of just parks. I'm not sure if I have those or if I had to give them back after trainings though. I should have over a years worth of maps of various city parks including Augarten, but no guarantees on how up to date they are.

I think I can guess why both Hammer and Cristina are in Vienna this week (wouldn't mind being there myself). I've run on a couple of maps accessible by public transport in the Vienna area but can't remember the finer details of where they are and how to get to them. One of them, on flat ground near the Danube east of the city, was noteworthy because the most prominent features on the map were WW2 bomb craters.

I can't guess. Why?

Why not? Seems like a good week to go to Vienna.

Cool. Are you guys presenting?

You're welcome to our event on Sunday afternoon! Fast and fun terrain with plenty of WWII bomb holes.

I like orienteering, but if in Vienna, I don't know how I would find the time. I'd be in a cultural/intellectual equivalent of a food coma.

I was in Vienna once. I went to McDonalds.

Thanks for all the info. For those who read German (or are in the know), can you confirm that for both the Thursday and Sunday events it is possible to show up and race (no pre-registration)?

Barb, I am presenting but I couldn't find any way to make it relate to orienteering. :-)

Awesome! I was going to try to look for an abstract by you at the conference website but it got complicated.
Apr 14, 2015 3:59 PM #
OLCWienerwald:
Yes, at both events you just need to show up and register on-site. It doesn't matter if you pre-register or not.

Great, thanks!

make it relate to orienteering

DonĀ“t you need a map to know where to measure temperatures...?
(not an O map, but related, kind of...)

Interesting abstract - almost understood what was in it ;)

That looks an interesting paper - may well be wanting to get hold of some of your numbers when I'm writing the 2011-15 global climate assessment for WMO later this year.

I have actually used an O map in a scientific document (a conference poster looking at the role of topography and site exposure on differences between snow catch at two measuring sites in the Victorian mountains). In addition, one of the areas I've looked at a lot (either directly or indirectly) is the sensitivity of extreme low temperatures to local topography and land cover, a lot of the ideas for which have come from 30 years of early-morning runs.

Cristina, AWESOME abstract! Now I want to know your preliminary analysis of climate trends.
Wow, blairtrewin is writing the 2011-15 global climate assessment for WMO! What amazing people are on AP.

So I'll use this thread as a potential recruiting tool. Always good to have orienteers work in your lab. My PDF the last two years, Gustaf Granath, runs for OK Linne. I gave his talk today at the EGU earlier today since he was doing field research on a large fire that burned the WOC'04 long distance map last summer. The Swedish site may become a new research site of mine so a student working in my lab would spend longer times in Sweden. Any orienteers interested?

My main talk is Friday.

barb, oops, I was going to say, "Ignore the last sentence, we haven't gotten that far yet" but then I figured no one was actually going to read it so I didn't.

blair, I have 7TB of data to offer you but it "only" covers 1982-2009, so I don't think any of it will help you. Maybe some day. :-)

Cristina:
I'll add to Hammer's recruiting pitch -- I just saw his main talk this afternoon and I can say that it looks like very interesting research with tangible real-world relevance. That's not something all geoscientists can claim! Good orienteers should be especially encouraged to apply so that Hammer can go back to being the second best orienteer in his lab.

Sorry, haven't read through this discussion - Trained our CIOR MILCOMP folks South of Vienna (50km) back in July. There are several good maps outside of Weiner Nuestadt...to the East mostly. Check out HoHe Wand for sure! It's a brilliant escarpment maybe 70km to the Southeast of Vienna. They've got a Gasthaus on top where you can by O-maps...tremendous Orienteering!
