After getting feedback and getting stuff together I have come up with two weekend Training's. The info is below. If people have questions about logging or camping contact me. I with some help will be setting up the different training and courses. If you are coming and would like some specific training exercises we will do our best to accommodate those wishes. Anyone and everyone is welcome. I apologize for the first session being last minute. Again please contact me if you are interested in coming so we can prepare enough material. Thanks.

Session 1: September 24-25, Saturday from 12noon to 5/6pm at Happy Valley Meet in the parking lot of The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown High School. If you are late Drive down St. Mary's Rd to the north of the school. The training will be based at the cell tower at the end of the road. Sunday we will meet at the junction of Rt 22 and smokey Rd. The focus of the training will be middle distance races. Please contact Erin Schirm at emschirm@syr.edu if you are interested in attending. We would ask that each person pays 10$ for map and club expenses.

Session 2: November 12-13, Saturday starts at noon we will meet at green lakes front parking lot. Training will go till dark. Sunday training will be at Syracuse University Campus and surrounding area. It will start at 9am and Finish at 1-2 pm. The focus will be sprints and relay training. Please contact Erin Schirm at emschirm@syr.edu if you are interested in attending. We would ask that each person pays 10$ for map and club expenses.

Schirminator, you should be charging way more than $10. What will that work out to per hour both in terms of your time as well as those training?

I've wondered about this too. On the one hand participants get so much more from a training session than from an event. Even on a crude "minutes on the map" basis which very much understates things. On the other hand training is often seen as a cooperative activity, courses are rarely checked and sometimes have rough edges, things like toilets and creches are absent, clubs are prepared to make maps available for little or nothing, etc.

In this case I just want to get training opertunites out there. If people are coming from a distance that will be an expense aswell. In the future if people are willing to pay more that would be helpful, but for right now, esentailly free training on good maps is a good incentive, It would be nice to get numbers. The more numbers support this kind of effort the more worthwhile, consitent, and regular they become. Charging to much tunrs people away. I would like to get something going. If CNYO puts on a couple training events. And a couple other clubs do as well the north east could have a schedule full of A-meets and good weekend trainigns from september to early decmeber. Then we can start ski-o or whatever. It will build goos opertunites for juniors kids interested in the sport and eletes to better their O abilites. For exmaple If I know there are a few differnt levels of orienteerer coming I can set up training for a few different levels.

How much you charge depends on your purpose. If you are setting up the training anyway and just want more people to make it more fun, than a minimal charge will work toward that purpose. If it's to boost the club coffers or as a fund raiser for something, than charging more is appropriate. In any case, the amount of money raised will be disproportionally small compared to the time invested--especially if you try to accommodate more than one experience/fitness level.

You could always set up a donation bucket, somewhere. That way, people who feel they should pay more, can pay more, and those who feel they can't pay more, won't pay more.

This is a really great idea, btw! I'm considering the second one, depends how much snow is in the forecast by then =).
