Many thanks to the 27 teams that participated in the 2011 Dakota Rogaining Championships. It was great to see everyone and we enjoyed the great competition. Congratulations to Nicki Rehn and Liza Pye of Team Road Trip bagging 39 of the 49 total controls for first place overall with 2260 of the possible 2820 points. Second went to the team of Andrei Karpov and Ian Harding who also had 39 controls but 2160 points. The Mixed Champions were Gordon and Nancy McCurry of Ridge Runners with 27 controls and 1530 points. Final results will be posted soon on the event site, peakassurance.net. Hope to see you all again soon - certainly before 12 WRC 2014, I hope!

Also, a special thanks to our host and sponsors - Custer State Park, Zanfel, Mountain Hardwear, nuun, myTopo, TankaBar, Coca-Cola, RoadID, Scheels, and Roam'n Around. Being able to provide goodie bags and door prizes to the participants makes a great event even better! P.S. Please use the Zanfel so I don't have to say - I told you so. It's been a moist year in the Park...

Am I reading that correctly that the winning team was two women? If so, outstanding!

Yup! They're well-known in the Canadian adventure racing community.

Any chance of seeing the map once the results are up? The Nicki and Liza did well to win overall.

Well done Team Road Trip. I've heard that areas of the map faded in and out of reliability and accuracy. But you seemed to maintain a good sense of Canadian humor...from Liza's description of the first hours of the Rogaine:

...In the first hour and a half, Liza falls headfirst into a burr bush leaving her with a lovely coiffe for the remaining 22hrs. Two hours later, Nicki manages to walk into the only tree in a 10 acre clearing. We basically rocked the first 12hrs....

That's Canadian "humour". ;)

Someone can hopefully confirm since I can't find anything online but I believe Pam James and Catherine Hagen won the World Rogaining Champs overall. Maybe Kamloops in 1998?

The North American Champs, later than that. Nigel Aylott and Iiro Kakko won the Kamloops WRC in 1998.

Thanks so much Rick for a fantastic race! Nicki and I made it home safely after a ridiculously silly and sleep deprived tour of Custer, the Purple Pie Shop, and Mt Rushmore directly after the race, followed by a dead sleep on Sunday night and 16hrs of driving back to Calgary on Monday.

I definitely think that Nicki and my adventure racing background helps us to deal with the issue of unreliable roads and terrain on old tops that are sometimes 30 years old. Some of the "roads" we followed were outlined only because of the different vegitation that grew on them, or the firmness of the ground underfoot. The terrain that I had the most difficulty with was the sidehilling over rocks hidden in tall grasses. Night nav was difficult in some of the more open grassy areas since there were less features to feed off. Also, mental note for next time: don't forget your gaiters when you go to race in the grasslands! Oh, and Nicki did a fantastic job of pulling all of the burrs out of my hair. My nightmare of having to shave one side of my head did not come true.

My new buffalo trophy is now standing proud on my bookshelf in the little Rocky Mountain town I call home. That was the best Dakota Rogaining souvenir a girl could have asked for! Can't wait for 2014!! :)

Yes, it was a fabulous race. We navigated realy well over the first 14 hours, but then struggled with mental fatigue and map reading for a few hours (between 2.30-5.00 am) which threw us off our original plan. We managed to pull it together the next morning to push ourselves to get everything we could despite the fact our bodies were falling apart and it was hot hot hot. Liza and I suffer well.....that's our advantage. Paid off in the end.

Who would have known that South Dakota was so great?? Next time I'm flying down.

Nicki and Liza, glad you made it back safely. I loved your enthusiasm and competitive spirit. Yes, the Park is certainly not flat! Solid comments on the maps. That's why I warn folks about tracks and trails not on the With a good year of moisture, growth on even the marked tracks obscures visibility - especially at night. You ladies rocked with nav on the course! Your AR background served you well.

Please do send a picture of the arch for my collection. Thanks again for a great race.

P.S. Will post pics and final results very soon. Still have a lot of controls to pull and the heat is really on now. 100 degrees F today - ouch!

The ceramic buffalo trophies are fantastic! Congratulations on your win. :-)

Rick and BHOC -- thanks for a great rogaine. We enjoyed our adventure in the hills of Custer SP. The sponsor raffle prizes were a great final touch -- we were lucky to each win Mountain Hardwear items!

I was recently contacted by a participant that lost his Moscompass Model 8 Rainbow thumb compass with a blue thumb band. Believe it was lost between HH and CP 51. If found, please respond and I will connect parties. Thanks.

On an associated note, we will finish pulling controls this week and start compiling split times early in September. More soon!
