Blair, on your travels have you done much running in the areas between Tennant Creek and Kununurra? I'm wondering if there are any dangers I should be aware of if I go for a run in the morning. Dingoes?

I think Mr. Invisible is alluding to a certain unfortunate incident in the Kimberley a couple of years ago (and yes, it was dry season).

The area between Tennant Creek and Kununurra is one area I mostly didn't get to - are you going across the Tanami or via the highways? If it's the Tanami Anna Sheldon may know more as she's worked in that area. If you're running roads/tracks I wouldn't imagine too many hazards other than traffic on the main roads, if you're growing cross-country you'll want to find somewhere without spinifex; can be very rocky underfoot depending on where you are, and lots of long grass up north unless it's been burnt.

I have attempted to run in the area. The roads have low traffic volumes at high speed. The spinifex is horrible. Very solid gaiters. Not sure even they would work. There aren't all that many tracks. Limestone gorge is worth the visit. You will understand why it would appeal to an orienteer when you get there. Best venue I found was Katherine Gorge and its many trails. Great trail runs in the morning before the heat of the day. Hidden Valley in Kunnanurra is only a small run, but its worth repeating a few times, especially around sunrise and sunset. Despite the lakeside setting, the locals don't seem to see the value in investing in running trails. Boat ramps is more the local culture. And BBQs and eskies.

And no, I wasn't referring to Blair's vehicle demolition job, but to the crocs.

Thanks for the help/advice. I'll be just north of the Tanami. I think I'll just stick to the roads unless I see a good track somewhere - but it sounds like I need to be careful of spinifex.

Duct tape on your shoes will stop the spinifex most of the time - people remember gaiters but forget mesh shoes are vulnerable.
