Just in case you don't read kenny's training log (doesn't everyone?), I just released a test version of my orienteering game. Its not totally done, I still have to tweak a few things and add sweet things like internet multiplayer and random maps, but the basic concept is complete.

I downloaded the test version yesterday and have had a lot of fun playing with it.

It took me a while to figure out how to look at the map (use the space bar). I just found out how to orient the map and move it (sort of double hitting the space bar, then using the mouse once you've got an all white background).

It is a very cool game.

What a hoot! My first leg looked a lot like my first leg in real orienteering (after nearly drowning in the swamp, I had to go all the way back to the start to relocate).

I don't think the grunt when falling down after running into a tree is very realistic. I usually say something much more recognizable. Really cool would be if the guy would swear in the language of the specified country :)

Even in rough form, it's the best O game I've seen. Excellent work! (Hopefully, I'll still find time to get out and train this fall).

I have been looking for a game like this one for a long time...this is better by far than anything else I've found!! And so much fun! (I've been playing for a long time...I'm going to have to drag myself outside to get some REAL exercise in a few minutes!) Once the multiplayer feature is finished, I'd love to race online if anyone's interested :-)

Pretty cool so far, the graphics are slick and smooth, but for some reason, the map is garbled (garbage?) when I bring it up. So I did what any self respecting orienteer would do in that situation... I followed one of the other guys right to the flag!! Ok, A flag - I don't know if it was the right one or not. Ran past it, fell in the swamp, then somehow got my leg stuck in the middle of the flag and couldn't go anywhere until I remembered the key combo to jump - that seemed to do it. Gonna play with it some more...

Pretty cool though...

Well, I've found one pretty serious problem with the game. I ran into Suzanne Armstrong (literally) at a control and I fell down (with the usual politically correct grunt) and she didn't. Next time I see her in the woods for real, I'm takin' her out.

clint, can you mail me (gtw@mit.edu) the file called "initlog.txt" from the game directory [:/programfiles/cftest/] and I'll see what I can do to fix it. not sure whats going on, but I'll try to track it down.

eric, don't worry, they will get more creative than grunting...

everybody else, thanks for the positive feedback! if you have any suggestions for cool stuff I can do, let me know.

I like the O-suits! Linkoping OK and CSU was all I saw, but I am sure there will be lots more.

Adding some of the world elite runners might be interesting, but of course it is nice to have our American stars.

When I played the game, it was extremely jerky as if I was playing online with a slow connection. This is probably due to my computer being low on memory. The weird thing is my computer has no problem running other first person games such as Counter-Strike. Does this game require more than other games of it's nature?

yes and no. no because those guys write way faster code than I do. but yes because they aren't trying to draw thousands of trees at the same time, which is a whole lot different than drawing the inside of a warehouse and some rockets. its just different.

hi!
i have downloaded your game and installed it, but now when i click the icon it tells me that this sample cannot run with the current display settings... and to change it to a 16 or 32 bit setting, it is already set at 32 bit, but doesn't work at 16 bit either. Is there something else wrong with the screen setting? such as screen area?

Not quite sure whats wrong. If you go here:
http://biggins.mit.edu/cf/bugs.html
there are instructions on how to send me a couple log files. With those I can probably tell you whats going on.

I've had a lot of fun playing the game, it's somewhat addictive. I managed to finish the cambridge reservoir white course in seven minutes jumping the whole way, and about 8:15 running the whole way (after I memorized the course). I guess it's a lot faster to jump than to run.

Also, it seems that you can jump over the finish line and the clock doesn't stop. I don't know if that applies to trees or not, I tried it a bit and ended up grunting a lot. I guess that means that there's no bug so that you cannot jump through a tree and not suffer the consequences, but I'll try it out a bit more. Cool game though, I'm very impressed.
