A notably strong field at a local park event here yesterday including 1/3 of the recently announced Canadian Men's WOC team. The 3rd place finisher and organizer aren't too shabby either!!

Living Prairie Park

We should of designated this a "Canada Cup" race;)

Where's your women's field?

I don't think we have any women who run in the Elite 21-34 category. It would be nice to have some. But on the other hand, getting hammered by the young guys is already bad enough!

If you want to see a women's field check out the Manitoba web site and look for the results and photos from an eco-adventure race. Lots of women. Lots of men, too.
That happens all over North America where women and men will flock to the harder and more expensive adventure race but shun little old orienteering.
We've been down this discussion many times but it is just another example how orienteering has to 'sell the sizzle; not the steak'.
One simple way to do it would be to encourage official team categories. We used to have them and call them 'wayfarerers'.

Yep. Except we'd have to call them anything but "wayfarer" now, of course. Something like "Adventure Team" category or the like. Heck, make them lug a bike and a pack full of gear and they might be even happier (and that's only half kidding).

People have to have something they are proud to tell their co-workers about by the coffee pot when they're back to work Monday. Kicking butt in the "wayfarer" category does not sound all that impressive...

Let's not lose the focus that Manitoba has produced a few excellent athletes and are placing very well in my unofficial Canadian Jukola rankings (currently stored in my head; will post eventually on my log) in addition to making the WOC team. Quality and a bit of depth on the mens side is a nice combination.

The Canadian Venla club rankings might not be a long list.

Yeah, but you only need 4 women for venla whereas you need 7 men for jukola
