I don't think physios think about how the time spent on the different exercises, with all the repetitions adds up.
When I was doing physio after breaking my ankle, I was given a sheet of exercises to follow and over time the number of reps on each exercise increased. I worked out that by the time I was doing the full reps I'd be spending something like 50 minutes three times a day doing physio. I do'nt think anyone had actually done the calculations of how long these would take, but just set out a 'reasonable' looking increment. I did get up to about 40 minutes 3x a day before I swapped physios (they were on rotation) and my new physio was appalled at how long I was spending doing physio and cut it down to the essential exercises and a reasonable number of repetitions. I was very grateful as I got back an hour or more of time a day.

I have an entertaining picture in my mind of someone trying to teach you to do wimpy aerobics style step ups :) But its crap that they can't come up with a specific program with a reasonable time frame.
